Title: Windows 8 in pictures + public download link
Post by: va!n on September 13, 2011

With big interest i followed the online stream about windows 8 from the build conference. I have tried to take screenshots from interesting / important parts about windows 8. So you can download the screenshots as ZIP from here:

Pictures - 16,2 MB Zip (http://"http://www.secretly.de/windows8/Build.ZIP")

Btw you can download and test the first version of windows 8 in 32 and 64 bit without activation code ;)

My feeling exactly!  But think about it, they still need to provide developers with a version of W8 that can be used without all that clutter (something like W7 Pro today) and many big companies won't buy an OS for their employees if it encourages them on to facebook all the bleeding time!

I can see the way it's going though - the last version of Windows Messenger, Live! it's called these days, would not install without asking for all my social network logins (of which I have none) and it still says I have to come back later and fill them all in!

So you guys are getting really excited about a new version of Microsoft Windows?
I don't see any feature that makes be go "wow, i totally want that".

I like the sound fast booting thing and the lower usage of system resources. The C64 had it, and it worked fine. ;)
(I have an optimised Vista installation which goes from the Boot screen to Logon screen in under 10 seconds - if it can beat that, I'll be impressed)

I'm not keen on the prospect of the Metro whatsit - give me a desktop style interface any day.

+ Metro style with hubs for fast access

So it looks gay, but it totally isn't?

+ Integrated facebook and other comunication stuff

Am I the only one that's getting nervous with how much facebook is intergrating with everything else? The fact it can access my windows messenger contacts/emails (I'm pretty sure without my permission) is a little alarming

Hopefully I'll be able to disable Metro and Bacefook.

Nothing about that excites me...  It's so depressing it makes me want to go out and by a Mac and seriously, fuck Facebook.

Also the extreme fast booting, my copy of Windows 7 boots at the same speed it takes my monitor to switch on so that doesn't interest me either..  More money for old rope for Microsoft.

Plugins should work in Desktop mode, but I'm looking into ways of converting my Flash coding into HTML5, of which there appear to be many :)

All I know is that it breaks Code::Blocks on my friends test computer today.
We configured an PDcurses program on Windows 7 and Windows 8 using a fresh install on both. Apparently they added some new shell so CodeBlocks C and C++ programs use the wrong one by default.

I'm glad to see that one doesn't have to use their Fisher Price huge arthritic button interface all the time. I'd rather 30 menu options instantly visable in an ugly grey menu instead of 14 large glossy icons.
Then again I hate the Unity desktop for Linux for the very same reason.

I'm going to catch a lot of flack for this thought, but modern computers really hide the interesting bits from the users.
Soon computers won't have icons, they will have holes and colorful wooden blocks that one pounds through shaped holes to activate programs.
People really think a computer is a magic collection of icons anymore and the computer works on unicorn farts, pixie magic, and rainbows.

Maybe the magic is lost on me since I don't own a tablet nor a smartphone.

I sure am grumpy tonight.  ::)

I agree - the problem I've had with XP's default Start Menu and Control Panel when compared to Windows 98 (for example) is that the My Computer is off the desktop and hidden away in the Start Menu, and most of the Control Panel icons are hidden unless you enable them.

From a technical point of view, it was easier to find what you wanted in 98. Vista and 7 have made this even worse.

Windows 8's default Metro interface has taken this even further.

Windows 9 will replace everything with one giant button, with the direction we're seeing.

It sounds like the Mac Book Wheel all over again.

Bill Gates: Wow, people really seem to like this apple shit, let's make our computer more like a mac!

Everyone: But, we bought PCs because we hate macs! Don't do it!

Bill Gates: Who said that?

That's the plan.  To abolish coding and turn it into design, augmented by user interfaces, I know I've said this before but I'll say it again.  It's good news for people who do actually understand programming because we'll be earning shitloads in the future when there's nobody left to maintain all the legacy code.

I'll bear that in mind when we get replaced by one man with a degree in touch screen button pressing, and my employer realises their mistake :D

I use XP (mostly) at home, and I still have one of the few remaining XP computers at work, because the document scanner won't work with Windows 7.
