Hi Everyone, Happy new year.
I've not been around for a while and haven't been doing much but I saw this recently and thought it could be an ideal platform for the demoscene.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/
Anyway, all the best for the new year and I'll maybe see you around as I fancy getting back into doing some things.
Fryer.

I think that it will sell like hotcakes, it's the price of a dvd and will provide a fixed and cheap platform for developing on.. I'd be surprised if this isn't adopted by a lot of sceners.
Welcome Back Fryer, really good to see you here again :)
-
Yeah - cool news that you are back Fryer!!!
-
Thanks Nick, yep, the cost, fixed hardware, size and HDMI all make it ideal imo. I did a quick search but didn't see anything, has there been any discussion on it before?
-
Not as far as I can remember, save for the usual discussions about people trying to re-launch the AMiga or trying to sell PC's that look like Amigas.
This is definitely the right approach to take - cheap enough to take a risk on, standardised and able to plug into a TV and keyboard.. It's a perfect concept, I'll buy one when they are available.
-
Raspberry PI looks a VERY promising platform, actually they seems to be in an "advanced beta" phase of development. SOC platforms are getting more and more popular month after month. Let's see when the board reach stable production time.

and as far away I remember, the ARM assembly is one of the beautifull to write! A friend of mine showed me some example on Acorn machine... was really nice!
I hope this board let us write some spicy code, like in the good old time...
-
I first heard about this a year ago and have been patiently (and excitedly) waiting for it to arrive since. Sounds like a great platform to develop for, both for demos and handy little tools. I can think of loads of great things it could be made to do, especially with some kind of wi-fi enabled setup.
-
The thought of this has got a grip of me!
I am as excited as I have been about a new computer since I first saw an Amiga, I'm on the mailing list and I strongly suspect that this is going to become my platform of choice for releases when it becomes available..
Trying to imagine a BBC with a 32 bit processor and 700mhz makes me very enthusiastic :D
This is on an old A3010 (1mb and 40mhz IIRC);

yep I'm also waiting since ages a new computer that will allow me to make some lowlevel code. x86 is sooooo awfull.
For a machine at 40mhz, it runs so fast!
-
That is really great news that they've started making them :)
I can't wait to own one.
-
-
I've not been this excited about anything hardware related for as long as I can remember. I just wish they'd hurry up and start taking orders :)
-
Yeah, this looks really interesting but what should I expect in terms of speed?

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi)
"In August 2011, fifty Alpha boards were manufactured. These boards were functionally identical to the planned model B,[16] only larger to accommodate debug headers. Demos of the board showed it running the LXDE desktop on Debian, Quake 3 at 1080p,[17] and Full HD H.264 video over HDMI.[18]"
That sounds pretty nippy and damn tasty to me :)
-
Oooooo! :o
-
:trans:
mhhh did someone make a beautifull case for this board? found this, but could be better : http://www.moovika.fr/raspberry-pi.fr/ (http://www.moovika.fr/raspberry-pi.fr/)
-
That's the first case I've seen Jace. Looks pretty nice to me.
-
Here's my case.
Maybe not but I'm sure there'll be a few novel ideas.
-
Hehe, I actually have a mini guitar amp in a ciggy packet.
-
Some other things to consider would be to house the insides of a USB hub in the case too, if you want wifi then the dongle could be internal, same too for a wireless kb+mouse dongle.
I still have the 2.5 160Gb drive from my failed PS3 which could come in handy but might have to look into alternative ways of powering the whole lot.
-
I really hope the drivers are hardware accelerated. That makes a huge difference.
There is plenty of RAM to run a carefully crafted demo or game. I guess it comes with Debian which will run OK on 512 MB of ram, not sure about 256, it might be a bit pokey.
I hope this doesn't come across too ignorantly but perhaps this will give us a unified hardware platform for develop for. Much like the computers of yesteryear. I think the problem today is that you have the gamer crowd and everyone else who doesn't have a $300 graphics card and 16 GB of ram. It can be quite difficult to hit a moving target with hardware when developing any graphics based application.
This will give us a platform that will make games and demos highly portable. If you prefer Windows to Linux you can still use well established cross platform libraries like SDL, SFML, FLTK, GTK, and OpenGL.
My main concern is that memory and disk space is probably built in, meaning a finite number of reads and writes. This is meaningless though because the devices can be enjoyed into the ground and then replaced for a very fair price.
Heck with a computer this small you can enjoy emulated games and connect it to your HDMI television as a sort of portable arcade box. There are emulators like Zsnes that have been ported to Linux already.
Just my 2 cents. :)

Debian, Fedora and Archlinux at release.
2 versions/models of the board, A-128Mb(no ethernet) B-256Mb

The unified (except 2 different memorys) hardware platform seems to be part of it's appeal.

There's no built in storage, the user provides that with either SD cards or USB storage, I think it'll boot off either.
Memory is built in and can't be changed so you're pretty much stuck with the amount that came with the model you buy although I wouldn't be surprised to see some ways of upgrading the memory popping up.

Some bold claims about the Pi's GPU (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-raspberry-pi-gpu-outperforms-iphone-4s).
Twice as fast as an iPhone4S? hmmm
-
If it's easier to code for than an iPhone, I'm on board ;)
-

Well you're probably looking at C, C++, Python, built in.
That said things like Blitzmax and Java are possible too.
I guess we can all code the same assembly for such a platform as the CPU will be consistent.
-
They look like managable languages.
-
-
I intend to be fast asleep at 6am though :)
Bah! Amateur! ;D
Thanks for the heads up, I've been looking forward to this!
-
It is going to be difficult.
Everyone in the known world is ordering one of these things... :whack:
-
Update:
The traffic is breaking every site they divert it to.
Their site has well collapsed,
RS Component is down
Farnell is also down.
-
Managed to connect to RS Components, but it will only let me register an interest rather than order. The Farnell site is still unreachable for me.
-
Farnell site just lets you register an interest too. I read that this is to stop people buying multiple items at the moment. We'll see...
-
I have order one and cant wait to get my Hand on :)
-
I've registered my interest buy couldn't see an opportunity to buy one?
Have you been able to pay for one Hotshot?
-

I have registered too and they going send me links to order one but dont know when thought :(
P.S. I have made error in my last post but at least I correct it in second post ::)
P.S.S. 100,000 People Pre Order them in just Hour !!! Whoaffff ! :o
-
I found out that it is possible to buy the Raspberry Pi from Premier Farnell because I paid for mine today :)
Estimated delivery date is Middle of April.
-
You're so lucky, no more available! I just have to wait... :(
Hmm it seems that the next produced will be the A model : no ethernet and no HDMI. :telloff:
Hope to get the B one soon...
-
I just got an email from Farnell to tell me that my delivery date has ben put back to 15th May.
They must have had a ton of orders.
-
Hmmm I think I will wait until the end of the rush ;)
-
Yeah, that looks fantastic :)
-
143 days lead time for mine, up from 66 when I ordered it on 6th March! And there have been problems with the ethernet port (http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/781) on the first batch.
Jim
-
Look at it the way I do Jim.. buy a case and you'll be able to pretend you've got one.
-
And hopefully they'll have all the problems ironed out by the time you get it.
-
I'll wait until the supply more closely matches demand.
Building a case will be fun.
-
I can see this being a great little demoscene device for GL stuff as it brings back a cheap, unified widely available fixed performance platform that can be pushed.
I've got one on order with RS, and one with Farnell :)
I plan to develop any effects on windows and have #ifdef's to make it work / scale to the pi.
-
I've got one on order with RS, and one with Farnell :)
Same here. My delivery date is estimated to be in May - it's going to be great to have a static and affordable platform to develop for again :)
-
I saw some glsl scripting on the raspberry here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-vBbqamNBU&t=2m42s).
Seems like that thing is more interesting than I thought...
-
outside the price and size the GPU is the killer feature really..
they officially claim the gpu is twice as powerful as the one in an iphone 4s
-
Does this mean Raspberry Demos!! :)

I think it does Clyde :)

I've an email from element14 saying mine will be arriving the week beginning 25th June.

Cool :)
04/06/2012 for me apparently. From Farnelll.

My Farnell order is coming next week apparently :)
-
I will be Ordering Raspberry PI today and I will get it in 3 weeks time    ;D

Are you coming to Sundown this year Hotshot?
I'm hoping to take mine along if I get it in time.. Should be a lot easier to transport than my desktop.
-

While I hope that is true, I ordered mine 2 1/2 months ago and it will not be here in 3 weeks' time.

September? I dont even know what I will be doing in September lol
I might go there but it is very long way to get there!

My Pi is in the post!
Yabbadabbadoo!!
-
Got my Pi today :) I need to get some bits from Maplins on Sunday, can't go tomorrow as it's my brothers wedding.. Typical for it to turn up now! Still, I'm glad I've finally got my hands on one.
-
Looking forward to seeing were you guys go with these. Wonder how many demo coders have purchased them.

It's going to be nice to have a static platform to program for again :)

I got it :updance:
Now I need get USB Keyboard and USB hub today then I can have look at what does it do :)
-
I have good test on Raspberry PI and Alright but the price alone for small computer is WORTH IT :D
-
Hi Hotshot, did you buy your bits? :)
-
Hi Hotshot, did you buy your bits?
Yes, I did ;D and my OS is LXDE(not my cup of tea thought but it does the job)
I am using Geany at the moment and learn Python on it :)
There somethings that I dont know much about Geany IDE as it seem that got multi language like(see the screenshot blow)

-
My RapsberryPI is on its way home!... just left Farnell today!
-
->Hotshot - those are just the languages the editor understands and will do nice source code colouring for.
However most linux installs, including the one on raspberry pi, come with C and C++ compilers, and an assembler built in.
Try typing these three lines in the console
gcc -v
g++ -v
as -version
All you need to do now is write the code! ;)
Jim
-
thanks jim and I will let you know how I get on...

Hi,
I've received mine last week.
I've tested RiscOS. Seems to be a nice OS on Rasp when completed !
I use Raspbian on a daily basis.
Good points :
Quake 3 compiles and runs perfectly
All demo sources codes (in /opt/vc) compile and run great .
We don't need X to display gfx ! That's a good point for programming this fruit.
broadcom's gl libraries seem to be of a good quality.
Weak points :
memory footprint with raspbian is quite huge for such a tiny device (between 40 and 50 Mb)
We need of a good ARM assembler. AS could do the job, but it's not ARM syntax compliant.
If you want to use 3D functions, a memory split of 192/64 or 128/128 is needed.
I wish someone releases an asm-one like environnement. In the meantime, emacs do the job.

Hey, yep cool that Risc OS is now on Raspberry PI! Does it run fine?
I think I will really buy one, coz this was a cool OS at the time... :D

Are they still way behind or are they shipping reasonably well now? There're links to a couple of shops from the official site and the estimated delivery times are different anywhere I look.
-
I have hardly used it since I was coding python(yes, I got frustration with it as couldn't get it working :( ) and I might sell it if someone is interest :)
-
Less than a week to get one here, and they're all the new 512MB ones.

Element 14 (http://www.element14.com/community/groups/raspberry-pi?ICID=hp-rasppigroupban) seems to be the best place to order from at the moment. Delivering seem to be taking ~2 weeks, so pretty good. My last one was quoted at 3 weeks but arrived in under 2.

I use Python quite a bit in Debian.
Maybe you could tell me what you are attempting to do?
From the terminal it should be as easy as typing: python <path to program file here>
Now if you are trying to do graphcal things you'll need to install the Pygame module.
I find a terminal editor works fine for programming.
There is less setup involved and you don't get silly "project" files.
