It's been taken off line until further notice;
http://www.codersworkshop.com/
Anyone know what happened?
See Krylar, this is what happens when you sell out to a company like Idigicon.
-
I've been reading a post at BB.com and going from what some peeps say, it's due to an announce about Cobra on Tue/Wed and they are doing some maintenance.
-
Mmm. Lots of rumours going on over there but I can't see why they'd have to take the forums offline because Cobra is finally coming out.
I don't have much time for Idigicon. That site will never be what it was anyway... They haven't got the charisma. A site either works or it doesn't, that forum is only busy because they inherited Krylars legacy afaic. I'll never look on them in the same light after George Bray's conduct that time before.

As I've said a number of times over msn chats Coders Porkchop, is mostly a gimmick for advertising their products; with a forum and showcase thrown in for something to attract people. But it fails for lots of reasons, one being it's not properlly looked after. Which is a shame as when it was the first day; it was looking to be quite good. If they had just jazzed up the gfx and spruced BlitzCoder up with a new name without having to go for a complete redesign it would of been way better.
I used to roam quite a few boards when Blitz was at it's peak of fame and interest, but like all good things, there has to be an end. Which is a shame.
I doubt I'll be getting Cobra mainly due to money matters and also spare time. If I win the lottery and don't have to worry about paying the bills or waiting for the NHS to sort out my MIR scan results, then I'd probably get it. But I can't even afford a lottery ticket, so that options out!
Hehehehe.
Hopefully it's nothing serious with their site.

I don't even think it needed a facelift Clyde. The only problem that I would say that BC had was that the showcase was broken all the time towards the end.
If you notice, the move to CW pissed a lot of the core members off, cool people like Grim123, Specis, Steve Elliot and more all got up and leftSeth in charge of the kiddies.
I am not saying that all the members of CW are children, but I will say that I am surprised that the handful of proper coders over there who could do better, spend their time writing stuff to amuse the kiddies or answering "how do I write a mmorpg" questions all the time.
This was doomed to fail I think. CW has become in my eyes worse than most console fanboy websites.
I hope it stays broken :)

Taken from the front page of Coders Workshop Today;
As you are probably aware, things have been a little quiet on the Cobra front over the past few months. During this time, Idigicon and myself have been in discussion regarding the best way to promote and sell Cobra. We are now in a position to explain what has been decided, and we hope that the following will clear up the situation.
Over the past couple of years, Idigicon have developed a strong presence in the education market, with both their extensive range of educational products, and their strong support for educational initiatives in the UK. In this time, there has also been a shift in the market for development tools like Cobra. Therefore we have decided that the best way forward for Cobra is to re-target it as an educational tool, aimed at schools, colleges and their students. This way we can build on the experience that Idigicon has in this field, and get Cobra more widely recognised.
A specific version of Cobra (Cobra Learning Edition – CobraLE) has been developed for this purpose, and is currently being tailored to integrate into schemes developed by e-skills UK, to bring programming back into ICT courses at school level.
Some of you may be confused by this decision, but we also believe you will understand that this decision has been taken after many months of thought and that any company has to go with an approach where it sees the best returns overall. Idigicon can use their strengths in education to promote Cobra, and allow Cobra LE to be tailored to the specific teaching requirements which e-skills UK feed back to us.
For further information about other Cobra related developments, please see www.squeakyduck.co.uk
Graham Kennedy & Idigicon
Sooo. What are we to deduce from this?
I would like to ask is it possible that Idigicon bought Blitzcoder hoping to market Cobra to it's userbase and then for whatever reason, maybe the user base wasn't there any more or a schools contract was more lucrative, decided to sell Cobra to the educational market and saw that there was no more value in the Blitzcoder communtity.
Or perhaps Cobra is fucked?
Maybe.
I don't know. All I know is that Coders Workshop is still down and as far as I am concerned, Idigicon have shit on the old Blitzcoder community from a great height. They have the webspace and the domain name, it wouldn't cost a lot of money to keep CW active. By Shutting the site down for "maintainence" these cock suckers are showing their true colours.
All the CW meet ups in the past are pure shit as far as I am concerned, just PR excercises for a mediocre softco so they can pretend to be a caring company. I feel vindicated for telling that Asshole George Bray what I thought when he fucked with our comp on the old board too, and also one member in particular who was actually quite a good member of the forum but left after sending me an email saying he disagreed with my flaming of the Judas bastard asshole Bray maybe ought to look at things again eh Mac? I see through assholes and Bray is an asshole. CW well I'm sort of unsurprised at this latest development... Krylar, I wonder if he cares. Idigicon.....
Actually I hope they rot in hell and that the good members of CW can find somewhere to hang out. The sensible ones are welcome here. The rest of them can join some playstation fanboy sites.
-
I am almost certainly going to code an idigicon fucktro.
-
Fucktro? Hehe, never heard about that one. I agree that CW isn't anything like it should be, and if it opens again I won't be coming back - it's just a waste of time.
-
;D lol, my money is on this option:
Or perhaps Cobra is fucked?
I suspect that they've either run into dev problems and have had to seriously prune it's features, or Idigicon have looked at it and decided it doesn't really offer anything over existing products for the indie game developer.
Seems really Jack the way they just pulled the plug on the website without any advance notice, reason, or statement about when (or even if) it's going to be back online. It seems even the moderators were (and still are) completely in the dark.
I have a problem with the developer of Cobra. I mean, this guy has been hyping it up on that site for 2 years now, making all sorts of promises, stringing guys along, and now he pulls this stunt. I'm not even sure what the point of the announcement is. The damn thing still hasn't been released yet and he still hasn't committed to any date.
Maybe he's just preparing the ground for further disappointing announcements. I note he's been very coy about making any definitive statements, despite being asked pointedly on his own website, citing "contractual obligations". I mean, what are we talking about here for God's sake, cryptographic software for the NSA?
He also claims he's not touting his wares on BB.com but every time anyone says anything negative about Cobra he immediately leaps in to do some damage control.
-
When I was a lad and at school, all we did in class was do excercises on Word Processors, Spread sheets, and Databases. And that was for my GCSE's. So unless Schools have dramatically changed in what they teach nowadays, then somehow I don't see how schools will teach computer programming and especially in a basic language. I dont get the logic on the announcement of Learning Edition. Am I wrong in saying that all languages are learniing editions.
Anyhow, thats enough about CW I need some sleep/
-
I am almost certainly going to code an idigicon fucktro.
LOL
To be honest....the CW wasnt the same or Sucessful as Blitzcoder because there loads of newbie on the forum which scare all the pro Coder away like Grim123, Specis, Steve Elliot and more as I think they gone to blitzbasic.com forum. They are sick of hearing newbie people who want to make mmorpg all the time when they couldnt do it. no offence to newbie people.
There is another things that is lacking is there isnt much tutorial on CW than BlitzCoder.
-
I hope that the Cobra author has managed to get some cash out of Idigicon.
I'm inclined to think that Cobra is not viable and that's why they've pulled the plug.
-
Sounds a bit bonkers to me their strategies. Why try and reinvent the wheel and change a good thing. I was under the impression they were redeveloping Cobra for the Education market.
-
I think it's just a fucking smoke screen Clyde.
Why not market the language at the homebrew community as well as the educational market?
I tell you what' I'll believe it when I see it. And what school would want to use Cobra?
There are hundreds of programming languages out there and Cobra is hardly an industry standard.
It seems to me that Idigicon are not telling us even a small percentage of everything. And let's be fair, do all that many people care anyway? The people who were Blitz basic users stayed loyal and all went to Blitzbasic.com instead.
There are some upset fanboys is all.
But I still feel vindicated because of the way things transpired between them and me before.
-
Eh, I always disliked CW, too much ads, not enough true helpfulness. I really liked BC though, and wish it could somehow come back..
And I never believed in Cobra, it was too good ot be true. No single person, or small team of people can write a system that practically claims to be the fastest graphics software on earth when people like Microsoft have their huge teams of people working on things like DX.. SO yeah.
And I like your idea Shockwave. Do a demo with a Cobra being cut into shreds :D
-
This idea has legs.
The sick snake demo?
Perhaps a wireframe cobra in a vib ribbon stylee crawling along and vommiting up nonsense shit claims.
-
Still not open and it driving all the programmer away and moving to BlitzBasic I think....
-
Don't blame the programmer. Not his fault. Any fucktro's should be aimed at Idigicon :whack: for being a crap outfit and not even letting folks know they were shutting down the site. Cobra Basic may well be a fine product, I talked to one tester who said it was really good.

I mean Idigicon is to BLAME because it driving all the programmer away and moving to BlitzBasic.com and Coder Workshop is going to Lose load of people there!
Cobra is going to be interesting one as I saw it in my own eyes when I was talking to Graham K about his Cobra and he show me quite lots of stuff running in cobra Last year of november(coder workshop event that I went) . I am impress and waiting to get one but dont know when it will come.
I would be Surprize if Idigicon will delay cobra until to march to sell COBRA but it would be nice if they could get COBRA out before xmas and shockwave is right.....I wouldnt be holding my breath for it.
-
Hmmm. Anyone been over to the squeeky duck forums? There are some guys there asking, pleading and begging for information on Cobra and what happened to Coders workshop and he's saying that the only thing that links him to Idigicon is two products that they own, Cobra and a piece of paper, yet he seems very quick to delete anything that gets posted on his site that Idigicon wouldn't like.
If Graham K has managed to squeeze some money out of Idigicon, good for him.
