Out of the blue, here is our Symmetry Comp 2014!

So, time to get inspired and start making your entry, and have fun!

Note: If you are too old to code (;D), put a video camera into a kaleidoscope, be creative!

ohhh!

two months might give enough time. let me just wrap up what i'm working on and see when inspiration strikes with an idea.

Nice theme. I am wondering if I could think of something original or it will be typical 2d or 3d caleidoscopes. But still cool. And much time.

bugger me i totally missed this earlier.

did you get the idea for this while building the map builder for our project ck?? anywho looks like i will be making something in webgl. i actually have a pretty cool idea for this..

I'd been discussing the theme with the rest of the admins and this one had the most support. There were other ideas in the hat and they may be used for future competitions.

The long time frame is there to allow more people to enter - some of us are very busy so it can be hard to produce anything with a chance of winning with a 4 week deadline.

With summer coming soon there will be many natural things with symmetry - butterflies, flowers, the next iPhone (I've lost count of how many of those there are), so there's tons of inspiration out there.

Have a few ideas..  This time i'm going for something simple, even if its not much, I think I can get an entry in this time. I shot too high last time, got stuck for time, and within the code and lost faith.

So tonight.. I just grabbed these off the my bookshelf and am flicking through them looking for inspiration, tucking bits of paper in, and have my feet up with a record on the player in the background  ;)

That James Gleick book is a great overview of the mathematicians involved in CT.

It is indeed.. after that I found and read this book, a less heavy, but still engaging companion to the glieck book

just managed another hour or so.. got another smalll piece of progress done

getting less time than i thought, but i think i'm also off on hols the week or so before the deadline

a few of my best chances for coding days, sundays have been stolen by the mrs's mother moving hours

definitely not going to make it with an entry.. even pared down I hit a wall of zero time, good weather and more excuses...

I just arrived from holidays the very night the compo was about to end. Thought for a little maybe to do a symmetrical voxel polar effect, from some old sources but here I didn't had the compiler ready, and in the laptop where I originally had this project, I had uninstalled the OS at the time. And time was few.
But when I saw there weren't enough entries, maybe I should have made some fast thing in SDL just to contribute. But now is too late.

Would've loved to see your enter as well Optimus and Canopy, both of those sound like some fine entries we missed out on.
I learned something here, no matter how far off the deadline actually is I will always start just a little bit too late...  :-\

Indeed - I thought 2 months would be excessive. Perhaps running it so close to the popular Christmas competition was a reason why so many were unable to enter, as they were busy with other things which the Christmas season had delayed.

I don't really think it was too close but in the easter season a lot of my colleagues take holidays (especially those with kids), so typically all deadlines are due right before easter and work becomes frantically busy...

i've only just now found the time/inclination to sit back down coding again (schools are back, so the mrs is back at work..) and first thing on the list is to finish what i had started with this challenge. i guess i know theres little chance of more coding after this beyond mar/apr! :)
