Title: [Symmetry_2014] Cyberspace Ruptures
Post by: Kirl on April 23, 2014
Hi all!

A quick and slightly dirty entry here. I made a much earlier start but it was plagued by a breaking bug until yesterday. Happy to get something working before the deadline. The bug turned out to be a stupid error on my part, so the fix was about as frustrating as the days tracking it!
 :hammer:

Move mouse for FX
Click to change colors.
Ctrl - toggles autoplay off/on
Up/Down - change number of trails
nr keys 1-4 toggle shapes: 1- lines 2- streaks 3- circles 4- squares
Spacebar - toggle static screen state and fading. In permanent screen mode you can manually draw some awesome static patterns! Use Ctrl to turn of autoplay first.

Enjoy!

Very cool looking, but why such a small canvas?

Thank you guys!  :)

I shrunk the canvas for speed reasons while working on it and forgot to size it back up eventually. It's stuck in early experimental phase, no optimisation except for left over hacks. Only chrome renders it almost decently for me still, which reminds me to recommend Chrome! I know precious little on Canvas in general and optimising especially, but hope to change that soonish.

I'm losing my Flash8 adiction, upgrading is not an option with Adobe's superior bloating skills...   :bombgob:
I don't like Apple either, but when riding in the pelt of giants there's not a lot of choice. I should look into SVG as well.

As a wise man once said in the Halloween comp, "Flash is dead, Javascript is undead"

The visuals are certainly breathtaking. Was the audio produced procedurally?

Poor Flash, where did it start to go so wrong? ;)

Thanks CK, the audio is a short looping reese bass, but the volume is controlled by the speed of the springy trail thingies. It works great when it gets slow as well, because the volume will always remain in synch with the visuals, easy synch. :)

Regarding Flash, Adobe ruined it, Apple discredited it and native graphics support for browsers made it obsolete. Flash had a good run and it will probably limp along for a while longer, it was good while it lasted. :)

I'll have to research the term "reese bass" now... something to do with taking 2 saw waves and de-tuning one of them. Now I'll have to research the term "de-tune"... ;)

You know a lot of JS tricks that I don't and the fun part for me is trying to keep up.

May Flash live forever, if only to allow us to watch some of the oddest animated productions of the last 15 years. But in terms of Actionscript, it's now obsolete.

Thank you guys!

I hear you CK, technical details of audio can be confusing and not very enlightening sometimes. But if you listen to some examples (https://www.freesound.org/search/?q=reese+bass), you'll understand at once what a reese bass is. I love freesound.org btw, there's loads of awesome and weird sounds there.
