Title: Math Image Challenge..
Post by: Shockwave on November 19, 2006
Well, after the success of the last competition we're going to have a little one now to keep things interested.
Lots of interest has been shown lately in things like curves and especially Chladni textures so here is a challenge to put all that to use.

Here are the criterea..

Please do not use any external graphics or music, this is just to generate a single screen, you can use whatever api and programming language that you like, entries should run on a PC.

The idea is to generate a single display using mathematics, this could be something such as a computer generated landscape, a mandlebrot, any sort of math picture from something simple like a keftale, a plasma, tunnel, voxe landscapel, right up to using mathematically generated shapes and textures.

Some cool things to use would be cubic splines, lorenz attractors, etc etc..  It's really up to you.
A static image would be fine, as would something animated and demo-ish.

If you decide to include music and scroll etc, these will not be taken into account in the voting.

Please post your entries for this challenge in this forum with the prefix MATHCOMP.

What's on offer for the people who enter this challenge?

Well, first go off, the voting (as usual) will be decided by the forum users, the chalenge is open to all members of this forum.
Please enter only original code, you do not need to supply your source if you don't want to but any members who do will get an extra 50 posts for each entry they supply with source.

You can post as many entries as you like.

All entrants will get +2 Karma and +50 posts FOR EACH ENTRY!

For the winners, because there is no cash on offer will get enhanced stuff;

1st Place will get ++20 Karma ++2000 Posts Custom Winners graphic sig.
2nd Place will get ++15 Karma ++1500 Posts, Custom Winners graphic sig.
3rd Place will get ++10 Karma ++1000 Posts, Custom Winners graphic sig.
4th Place will get ++5 Karm ++500 Posts, Custom Winners graphics sig.

If an entrant has entered say, 4 things for example, only the one with the most votes will be used to determine a placing, so if someone entered some stuff that came 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th, that entrant would get first prize and 2nd prize would go to the person who's entry had got 5th place.. You get the picture!

The challenge is open now and will close in 14 days from this post :)

Good luck and I' looking forward to seeing your marvellous entries :)

Well guess what? I have had a couple more chladni related ideas. :o If you are not sick of looking at them, I'll try and see how they turn out. :)

I had to split the topic, please post any entries in their own threads, thanks :)

Sorry, I didn't realize we needed to start a new thread. Thanks for fixing that.

I'd say it's a great compo and maybe I will try to do something for it because a little code (but a good idea maybe) is needed.

too busy at the moment, but i'll start on my entry next week :)

a few points.. personally i think the rules arent strict enough.. some form of limits on technology and size should be in there imo.. someone writing stuff with 2.0 or even 3.0 shaders and unlimited exe size competing with someone who's using for example a 10k exe with basic opengl, is really unfair.. but thats just my $0.02

I JUST started on a project for TUM '06, so I won't be working on this one. Thanks for the PM, I wish I could compete.....actually.....would a GUI texgen tool count?
Title: Re: Math Image Challenge..

Mind, fair point but if there were limitations on size / technology etc it would most certainly exclude a lot of the people on this board from entering because so many different programming styles and languages are used here. Honestly I think that members of the forum will take the technological aspects of the creation into account when voting.

Really looking forward to seeing the entries :)

I'm going to have a go at this myself in a break from tradition, I never normally enter the comps on this board :)

Not sure if I can enter this one . . . not sure how to do fractals?!? or stuff like that - never had the need for them . . . sorry!
Looking forward to seeing the entries though! Good luck you guys!

Regards
Drew

Hmmm - I know, I'll do an animated fractal type of thing.

Or maybe I'll do some sort of landscape generator using random inputs such as names/numbers/strings/etc.

This is great for me - I can't manage music, so I'll be on a level playing field!

Drew, you needen't have to enter a fractal if you'd like a go, there are lots of different ways to make a computer generated picture, I guess that even with a little bit of sin and cos you could make something, even a plasma if it's done nicely would be cool :)

what about a buggy scroller?  if it get 1fps, that's some kind of "art", no? :D  (just kidding hehe)

I think mine will have to be a fractalesque pyramid builder...

You'll see what I mean.

@Nick - you still didn't answer my question :P

Why don't the board members share their opinion?

Wold a texgen tool count for this kind of thing, or rather a product FROM the tool?
Title: Re: Math Image Challenge..
Post by: taj on November 25, 2006
My opinion - most texgens combine simple functions in simple ways to create complex output. Seems to obey the rules (no external images) etc. S Rules dont say the stuff has to be written for the compo...can be based on previous work so, I guess sure why not?

Greetings, loyal subjects.

I am CombatPharoah. View my pyramids and vote for them, or I will ravage your lands with my great armies. Of living pyramids.

Ah yes. How does High Priest sound?

If I die childless, you become Pharoah - if you're not buried with me, like all of my other subjects.
Welcome aboard.
