thanks guys :) I wish at least some of my songs would have something to give to the scene...

edit note: This isn't what I wrote, this is from another source, and it seemed like the best advice for someone getting into music writing.  It helped me, thanks!

Everything you write is for the benefit of someone.  Put your all into whatever you write, and it will find its way to its intended audience.

Try not to emulate, just write.  Listen to lots of other people's music because this whole thing is reciprocal.  Include yourself in the music making process in other ways.
No one can be the king, and if you can accept being another brick this house then you will have the satisfaction you desire, and achieve the contribution you want to without having known you did so.
Better advice you will never get.

General chat / Just dig in and code
« on: February 25, 2009 »
The past couple of days I've had a lot of time to learn various coding related things.
I've been studying Denthor's demo tutorials (I am convinced everyone is familiar with them, but in case that is false, follow this link http://lexoft.eu/asphyxia/).

I am a purpose driven person.  I am used to having a straight up plan of action and set of goals before I do anything.  But I noticed something these past two days.

It was not the plan of action, but the dedication to commitment.
I said, "I will just dedicate myself to this demo thing, and just go with the flow, and just code this and that.  I won't rest on my laurels, I will go the extra mile, and put effort into accumulating raw experience."

Cut to the chase:  Denthor's routines are burned in my brain.  I have never been a pascal programmer, but at the end of straight up 2+hour sessions, and having never put my mind to this sort of thing:
I could quote you the pascal for Denthor's routines, and give you the sense of understanding that would allow me to translate them into other languages.

Moral of the story:  A good coding session is never wasted.  You may think, "What's the point", but if you can say, "Okay, I will dedicate myself to it wholly", I don't doubt the effect on me will be the effect on your abilities as a coder.

Clyde - Thanks for the information, I will incorporate it
Hotshot - I had no idea such a thing was on youtube, I'm glad you posted publicly in response to Clyde

Any replies are appreciated

PS: By "ladder of progress" I mean
Like maybe first using tutorials, then coding effects for a while, then doing gfx work, and so on

I'll make this one response (I usually just let the greets stand and refrain commenting but not this time)
Your greetings are welcome and needful
A friendly seemingly useless "Hi, welcome aboard" and such goes a long way and I'll make a mental note to follow suit
:)

Hello everyone!
I was very interested in demo coding back in 1997, but I was way to immature to focus on anything so it was just a dormant passing interest of watching demos and trying to maintain some fanciful connection to the scene I loved.
Now I've got time and the ability to focus so I've started coding again, and am happy to find a community of people it seems are interested in achieving plain goals that I'm working toward myself.
I don't think anyone here has any notions of being the next Future Crew, but there's something greatly satisfying about completing the challenges lying between making a demo from newbie to accomplished.
Cheers!~
