Deus eX Machina Texture Studio (DEMTEX) v0.6b
« on: December 27, 2006 »
so i thought i'd give you guys a sneak-preview of my new texture generator..

when i saw the screenshots thygrion posted of his texgen that had been in the works for something like 2 weeks i decided that i'd better get my thumb out my ass and start converting my texgen routines(that i have had finished for years) to delphi pascal and create the editor.. so what you see here is some 2 days of hardcore work with the UI and then some time on and off during the last 3 days.

feedback is appreciated, as usual.

That looks nice :) Is the purple one on the left at the bottom a voronoi texture?

well, the GUI is "completed" and all generators/filters etc are fully functional.. so feel free to give it a spin..

TODO:
loading/saving of generation data.
add some text, describing certain operations.
new interpolation code for the colorize operator.
catmull-rom spline interpolated subplasma.
clear out some bugs, giving odd runtime-errors
do some general optimizing/cleaning up of the GUI.

if it crashes when you run it, try to remember what you were doing, so i can try to fix it.
criticism appreciated, both constructive and destructive :P

Got this error msg when I tried to exit from the menu. But good tool. Suggestions :
Ability to do operation on all channels at once.
Color picker in addition to sliders
Ability to input parameters (numbers) by keyboard in addition to the sliders.
Keep on improving on it. Good work!

yeah i get that error too on occasions, i'll try to fix it asap..

editboxes for parameters is a no go, too much damn work at this point, maybe when i redesign the UI.
i was thinking about adding an "RGB" checkbox for the purpose of operating on all 3 layers at the same time, wont be implemented until i decide how to save the data etc..

color picker, yes.. some day :)

thanks for pointing some stuff out for me ;)

That was really good stuff. It didn't crash at all and I liked the way that different textures can be layered on top of each other. It makes an excellent variety of texture types. Good work :)

the crash on exit bug is fixed, was trying to free memory that wasnt allocated.. gg :P
no new exe yet though, since you can just use the X to quit.. also, there is a problem with saving bitmaps on layers 5 and 6, simply forgot to implement that, its fixed in future versions though.. for now, if you really want to save your tectures as bitmaps, copy them to layers 1-4 and activate the layer by single clicking it, then go file->export BMP.

been thinking about the catmullrom interpolation, and personally i think i'll stick to cosine interpolated subplasmas, first and foremost because calculating 8 subplasmas for the perlin noise function would be a tad slow with catmull-rom interpolation.

need to add Undo/Redo, but that wont be implemented until i have the operator-stack and DTF file saving/loading working..

and yeah shockie, its a voroni..

basically what this is is a showcase of what i/it can do.. my final version will be stripped down slightly, since i have way too many generators/filters etc now.. takes up way too much space in say a 64k intro..

i may or may not release the code for the generator part, however i will most likely release it as a delphi/FPC unit that can easilly be included in peoples projects.. might even try my hands on compiling it to a dll that can be linked in with C/C++ etc..  what people need to keep in mind when they read the above is that i spent years researching and writing this, i'm not usually "greedy" when it comes to sharing code but this has been my love-child for so long, so i dont really wanna give all my secrets away in the blink of an eye :P

oh, and for those of you who havent figured it out yet.. "View"->Tile/Zoom.. check one of em, and double click a texture :)

It's understandable that you would not want to give away the source to something that you have worked so hard on. Don't feel bad about it, hopefully this will inspire others to have a go at some texture generation themselves.

Mind,

Im amazed how quickly you come up with tools! Good ones too. This tool is more complex than me, so Im still learning it but it looks promising.
