Personally ripping graphics pisses me off to no end. It has nothing to do with legality but using ideas out of the artist's context. ripping sprites if for the 13 year old "game developers" on the Game Maker web forum.

Ripping graphics to do 1:1 remakes like Stormbringer does - is totally ok in my eyes.
I think 1:1 remakes are nearly impossible without ripping.

Of course - ripping game graphics and using the sprites in another - maybe even
commercial - product might be a controversial topic or even break copyright rules.

I run the demo, press Print Screen, and then load up MS Paint and click 'Paste'.

It's not ethically wrong to rip gfx from cracktros if they are going to be used in other cracktros or remakes.

Lots of Amiga cracktros use ripped gfx and sounds as a matter of course.

Just my $0.02

Ripping without credit is another thing all together.
As far as sceners attitudes to ripping, most ex cracktro makers are usually thrilled when thier cracktro is re-made :)

I guess I have to say a word here:

to rip graphics on the Amiga, I use this tool: GFXRipper (you can find it here: http://retro-remakes.net/index.php?topic=75.0)
works on native Amiga platforms and WinUAE emulator.

Otherwise, a screenshot using the print screen command on the PC running WinUAE works as well, as long as the emulation runs fine. But this creates too much overhead when ripping graphics with animated colors (e.g. scroll text characters with copper bars inside). Therefore I prefer old ripping methods.

Remaking the Amiga classic cracktros without ripping would not be "remaking" but "faking". IMHO, these remakes should be as close as possible to the original in order to have an added value. This includes original music replay and of course original graphics. Because of this ripping cannot be avoided.

It all seemed so right
So young and so eager
No end in sight
But now we are prisoners
In our own hearts
Nothing seems real
It's all torn apart

Of course - ripping game graphics and using the sprites in another - maybe even
commercial - product might be a controversial topic or even break copyright rules.

Not might be - is breaking copyright law. Anything made after 1978 (just incase :-) assuming the copyright is held by the company (99% of cases) the copyright will last 95 years from publication. Before 1978
it gets complicated.
