2010 eh?

And the last ever Breakpoint is taking place. I had always vowed to go to Breakpoint but now I know I will never do it, I was speaking to RC55 at the beginning of the year and he said that he was thinking of making Sundown 2010 the last one because it was a lot of work to organise it.

I'm looking at the people who still come to this forum too, I've known a lot of you for a lot of years, I've met some people here in person and I'm thinking about what have I personally got from the site.

And the answer is that I've got a lot out of it.

I've learned to do things with programming that I never would have understood on my own.
I've watched people starting off as beginners and becoming really proficient.
I talked about the demoscene to lots of like minded people.
I even got a job in computers largely because this forum helped to keep my dream alive.

I know that things have been quiet here over the last 6 months and I know that I haven't posted any code for ages, I want to change that. So this is an apology to all of you for not being around like I should have for the last 6 months.

It's also a huge thank you to you all for supporting the liquid challenge too, I've been enjoying the entries to the challenge, I am going to enter it too I hope.. I've left it kind of late to do but hopefully it will be pretty cool.

Thanks for stopping by anyway and to all the new guys who I should have welcomed, a warm welcome to this place. :)

I think the work we are doing here are slowly being noticed in the demoscene, as a place for "newcomers to start making demos".
There is a mention on hugi36 about this place, and you can see it's the only demoscene specific coding forum around.

So, congratulations to everyone here for making this nice forum, and let's hope more new sceners can be born here to help keeping demoscene alive.

Time sure has gone by way too fast. But through the years this place has always been one of the forums that I just have to check up on every now and then.

I have been in a slump coding wise for a while, but I am looking to get back to it, just have not found the right project that I feel motivated to work on. But I also do wish that I was a bit more active around here, and I certainly used to be in the past. I just have not been able to find the motivation for a while, with work and other "real life" stuff getting in the way and putting some stress into my life.

There just have not been much energy for these mind challenging activities. But I am in a process of making some changes to my life that should cut down on the stress and give me more energy to utilize for sparetime activities. I do feel sorry though, about not being more active for what has been a long time now.

I will probably not be able to make something for the liquid challenge, but I am hoping that I will be back in the coding saddle for the next challenge.

Those big parties were never my cup of tea, but it is still sad to see that they are closing down and there are fewer of them being held. It was one of the major drives in getting new people into the scene. But luckly this place is still around, and will hopefully be here for a good while yet. And some of the visitors here have gone on to produce some really kick ass productions, even won prices at parties, and for that we should be proud.

There are a ton of talent among the users of this forum, and to know that they all are as friendly as can be, that is just a testement to what kind of people this forum attracts.

Phew, well enough with the ramble, I just wanted to get my 2 cents in while I was still awake. Catch you on the flipside and keep coding guys.

I dont post much here at the moment, mostly I havent been doing any coding at all due to other stuff going on and spending far to much time playing games and MMO's. But I check the forum every day or so to see whats happening and check out what everyones up to.

Would like to get back into coding stuff, anything really but finding the motivation has been lacking for a while, I keep my eyes on the challenges hoping something will spark my imagination and get me to code something but then i get sidetracked. I have however been spending a fair bit of time reading about different modern effects and shaders and stuff, more because I like seeing how stuff is done. But its slowly making me want to try my hand at some of it so I keep reading more info :)

The DBF forum, from back in the ezdays right up till now has always been somewhere I found interesting, people talking tech, be it oldskool effects to stuff with shaders, its always friendly helpful and worth a look. Having seen some of the members go on to make some awesome projects is the icing on the cake and makes me proud to be a member, if somewhat quiet, of this great place.

I only just became active here, but I already got a lot out of this place. I've always been interested in procedural stuff, even before I could program I loved playing around with procedural effects. So much so, I even won a procedural shader contest back when I was still active on the 3d forums.

I've been checking out many of the results of past challenges and I'm extremely impressed with the stuff that came out of these forums. Two random examples I really like are Cells by HellFire and Grass Veins by Benny, among countless others. I really got a lot of inspiration out of this place in this short while. Spacewreck, rdc's Last Mission and the live feed of Breakpoint are some recent things I really enjoyed a lot, and would have never found on any of the other places I visit.

So thanks a bunch to all and I hope the demoscene and these forums will remain active for a long while to come!

Looking forward to all last minute liquid entries!

Wow I didn't expect to see replies like this when I made my post :)

There will be at least one more late entry for the liquid challenge, I've made something.. It's not much good and it's not finished yet but it's ok :)

Btw Kirl, those sphere derived objects look really excellent!

The best thing about this form is that it isn't dominated by biggoted "l-thirtythree-ts" who cannot spell, hate "n-hundred-bs", and are forever replacing vowels with numerical characters.

The audience participation is a plus, with all of the encouragement, help, challenges and tutorials. It's the sort of warm community atmosphere which seems to be dying out in the real world. Even when the server dies from time to time, we rally round and send in lost files or money.

I wonder what the forum would say if it had the AI.

personally? for me this forum is the demoscene and not pouet, in this forum you get help and certainly not demotivated by others due to "stupid  :hanging: competition".

I like this place. A helluva lot. I don't really do a whole lot here but it's a great resource. Where the fuck else do people talk about 16b code and YABASIC on the same board? The recession is a bitch out there in RL, though. Is that where everyone's gone?

Everything's quieter, everywhere. I went to a music festival a few months ago and saw the arcade fire headlining the main stage with only about 10,000 people watching them. Which is really small in a field meant to hold 80K. The motivation is just gone all over the place (It's 02:22 and I'm not even drunk writing this rambling comment) and I can't wait for the pissed off art to come back. Demosisdamngoodart.

Hi everyone!

This might be seen as a bit of a rambling, but well..

I personally think the scene died a bit with all those big parties, and that most people stopped releasing demos for fun and mostly released them at those said parties to win money or whatever. I stopped coding demos around 1993 when I got bored of vectors and started coding more systemfriendly utilities and even a BBS-System. Some years ago (2005) I did a 20 year amiga-demo that works on A500-A4000/060 that was the first thing I did in 68000 assembler in almost 8 years.

However, to make a shorter story, I've seen a lot of flash/java-remakes, but never wanted to start do flash or such, but then I found retro-remakes.net and this board and got a lot of inspiration to start doing some retro-intro/demos in OpenGL. Even if I havn't released anything yet, I've made a protracker-moduleplayer in C++ and I'm doing a framework to be able to compile the intros that I hopefully will redo soon for both windows and linux (I am running linux 100%, running the already made remakes in wine). When I'm done with the framework I intend to release the code as GPL for anyone to use, perhaps dual-licensed so you dont need to release your own code if you should use it in a remake and dont want to give away your sources.

Well, enough commersials, this site rock, and I hope I didn't offend anyone by thinking that the demoscene has been a bit booring for a long time. I just hope that some things, like releasing demos for fun, even between parties, will come back.

While I'm not that big on the Demo Scene, I pretty sure it's just having a rest, rather than dieing.

Don't worry about your post count, spitfire. Most of my posts are morale boosters rather than code. Maybe I should stop sitting on my hands and help people when they ask.
