Demo party?
« on: July 28, 2011 »
So I was thinking of going to sunrise but then decided probably not as I think I'd be a hanger on. I don't even have a laptop to take... and I wouldn't be making any production. But I've never been to a (demo) party before so don't know what to expect. Anyone able to enlighten me?

I've never been either. If someone you knew was going, and were taking a laptop, they may allow you to share theirs if you were to bring a production on a memory stick.

I get the feeling compiled languages such as C++ and Java rule the roost, but there may be room for me to bring a Flash demo if I were to go.

Usually it's situated in a large hall, there are rows of desks with some rows of chairs at the front.
Most people are usually at the desks getting drunk and working on stuff for the competitions or just catching up with their mates.

When it's competition time the partygoers go to the front of the hall to the rows of chairs and view the entries on the big screen.

Most of the parties I've been to had drunken freaks sleeping everywhere.  The party hall is nearly always dark and most people are dressed in black.

If Sunrise follows the same format as Sundown, it will be a friendly party with probably less than 100 people in total.

I can see myself being the last one to fall asleep, but I like the idea of almost everyone being dressed in black. Now, should I conform or wear that Hawiian shirt I've been saving? ;)

Demoparties rule. Plain and simple. Won't make it to Sunrise myself, but I'll be at Evoke (and likely without a prod). My suggestion would actually be to hit up irc (#breakpoint and #revision on ircnet are great, even if you don't care about those parties!) and get to know some people. Actually (duh), #ukscene on ircnet is the place to go if you're considering going to Sunrise.

But yeah, most people don't bring a prod and most don't care if you have one. It's about coming together and drinking with your nerdy scener buddies; the compos are awesome of course but it's really about coming together for something.

At least I think so. Only been to a few (NVision + The Gathering are a bit like conferences; @party, EasterGarden and Solskogen were much more "intimate" and I enjoyed them more, even though they were smaller), but they're seriously awesome. Even if you never attend Sunrise, you really should go to a party sometime.

Just my two cents :)
