As a novelty I have been considering playing around wiith a monochrome screen. The problem is that I don't know a good approach to getting my hands on a green or amber one. I think they look really nice but I'd need to connect something via VGA to my computer. I would buy one on ebay but shipping kills me as they are CRT and quite heavy.

Any ideas? I'd be willing to hack a cheap LCD if there is a way. Do they make cheap video mixers that can sum the RGB channels and then feed that average back into green? An odd place to ask maybe, but plenty of people got to play with monochrome CRT screens before me. I recall my grandma having a Brother word processor that had a really crisp yellow/amber screen. :)

Some kind of homemade screen filter is probably the cheapest solution. I expect you can buy them but it's likely they're only slightly tinted. I'd get hold of some green film and give that a try first.

What about emulating it with software filters, I'm guessing just filtering to mono and giving it a colour wouldn't be enough and you'd have to study the pixels close up to see their properties.

Hmmm
after quite a bit of thinking it occured to me that maybe I don't need to write any software or driver. Perhaps I get a VGA display that can let me set the color saturation to 0. Then get a piece of colored acrylic and overlay it since it will be grayscale.

Man I must sound like I'm nuts. :)

I think I misunderstood, you want to do this just for general usage?

That makes me want to make a text-mode style demo.

I now this is no help what so ever but I trashed one about a mouth ago, but if another one comes my way I will let you know as we keep getting old CRT's in, You would be surprised what's still out there.

Yeah, just wanted to see what a computer looks like with such limitations. Just for the novelty of it.

Ok great! I wonder if there is any special converter needed?
