Awards?

Yeah, Iv'e been wondering about this whole 'award' thing, what kind of awards are they exactly? Are they general crap such as 'I post too much', 'I have lots of karma' and 'look at me I'm Mr popular', or are they specific, admin created awards such as 'I programmed a 3D star-field in 10 lines, beat that'? Just curious, that's all.
