The Arcade TOPIC..
« on: February 28, 2007 »
We all know how the arcade interferes with the forum, and how!

Looking back at installing it I wouldn't have changed my mind, even if the games have been a complete pain in the arse to locate and test, I know that I have spent many happy hours in there, I will say that there is one more game to add this month, block copter, it's a version of last month's copter but without the bugs. The only difference is that this one needs you to hold the mouse instead of the space bar.

I figured out something this time around too.. A fair amount of games I found had seperate game data folders and these would not work with the arcade. I managed to figure out why now, so we have a new pool game, a marble madness type of game and also chucky egg.

If you could use this thread for general arcade stuff, I'll pin it.

You can put playing tips and bugs in here, and also if you locate any good pnflassh games, feel free to suggest them in here too.

First playing tips..

Harpoon lagoon.

I found one bug, this is when the shell opens and reveals the pearl. Do not attempt to grab it or it crashes the game horribly.
Another thing, when you are in the shop, you'll notice a shiny harpoon for $7999.. This is a waste of money, don't buy it otherwise your target will double next round and you'll lose the game.

Steer clear of those two things and you might find it (as I have) the most addictive game in the arcade apart from that sodding penguin.

In Donkey Kong at the start of each level you can climb three rows at most before encountering any barrels this will save you alot of time. you can sneak in another row if the barrel passes you out (overhead) since this row has two ladders that you can climb. You should climb the first ladder if possible.
the big ape keeps the top row well gaurded by lobbing barrel after barrel most of those barrels will drop down the last ladder of the top row. occasionally the barrel will drop down before this and you will get a great chance to scuttle up to the top row. but waiting for this to happen will waste precious time and points. If you are fast enough there is an alternative. As soon as one barrel passes the last ladder on the top row you can hurry up the ladder and go to the right. Now the next barrel will be hot on you're heals but you can simply jump to avoid it. the barrel should pass down the ladder giving you a clear path to the princess.

Yes, that can happen if you try to restart the game by clicking the back arrow on your browser.. The next time you play the game it will crash with that error. Better to wait until the game ends properly and use the "play again" link to restart the game.

Hope that helps :)

In 8-Ball Pool Championship, there are numerous bugs and I find the score system very unfair.

If you pot a ball from your break it doesn't register as the types of ball your going for ( Stripes Or Spots ); however you get 500 points per ball for doing so.

If the computer pots the white first, and then one of his balls goes in - points are taken off the player. Also If a foul is committed 2 shots arent awarded.

Also the computer cheats to stop you getting scores, by potting the players balls. If this happens, then I would of expected some points for this.

And if you miss the black when it's your last ball, the Computer is deemed the winner.

It is however one of the better Pool games and a fav of mine; somehow it's very addictive, and it gives a line of sight to help with potting.

I've wondered about that game for a while myself. Losing the game when you put the white in is the most annoying thing about it for me. It escaped the cull though because despite it's shortcomings it is a good game. I prefer the other pool game myself, less bugs and just as playable.

In Othello the computer is one nasty piece of work. Its very hard to trick the computer into making bad moves. So I decided to show people which positions of the board are strategically strong positions and which positions are big mistakes.

1) The corners are the most important positions if you control all the corners then the game is yours

2) In the picture attached the yellow squares indicate the worst positions for you to control because they give your opponent the oppertunity to take control of the corners

3) The blue squares indicate the positions that can be used to trick your opponent into making a bad move. This may set up a chain of events that will result in you capturing a corner.

now the computer will avoid placing a piece on one of those yellow squares if at all possible hence the importance of the blue squares (and a heavy dose of deception). Of course you can win without controlling the corners but its much more likely that whoever owns more corners will win

How to get a high score in Sonic ...

1) beat the game but do not exit (it doesnt matter what your score is)
2) start a new game (you will notice an extra cheat feature has been unlocked)

so long as you do not close the original window you can clock up a hefty score for yourself, This little trick will not work if you use the password / continue feature. Once you run out of lives the trick is broken you need to complete the game before you can start a new game and keep your original score. Now that its out in the open it should make for an interesting feat of endurance to get a highscore.

Dont think of this trick as a cheat its more a bonus for completing the game which is hard enough to do the first time let alone continueally completing the game

How to get a highscore in Contra

1) start up the game in 1 player mode this will pop open a menu

2) assign whatever keys you want to each action then click next (not ok)

3) the next menu allows you to select your default gun, The gun labeled "S" is the best in the list however with this gun selected any pickups you encounter in the game are likely to be inferrior to your new default gun. When you are ready select next to go to the last menu screen

4) this menu allows you to increase you health bar to a maximum of 30 selecting 30 health will not effect your scores but it will make the game a whole lot easier. you can also increase / decrease the difficulty setting for a maximum score you should select the maximum difficulty level (9) at this level you can even stand still at any point in the level where a badguy appears and just keep clocking up the kills while your timer keeps ticking down. lastly you can increase the speed this is useful because the speed at which the screen scrolls by default is not fast enough to allow you to jump across to certain platforms.

5) start up the game on the jungle level and keep killing anything that moves or looks dodgy until you complete the game :D

now there should be no problem getting a score in the 300,000 area

There is an exploit for Video Poker. Here is how it works ...
Play a game until you have increased your highscore then cashout. This saves you highscore so that you can continue where you left off later. Then play another game of poker but if you lose money simply cancle the game without using the cashout feature. When you play another game you will notice that you highscore is intact despite the fact that you just lost a fortune. Repeating the process will get you a massive score but be warned there is a whole lotta clicking involevd once you break the 1,000,000+ mark its simply not worth placing a bet that is less than 500,000 when you are dealing with millions

I never knew that there was an "exploit" there for that game. Video Poker is pretty sucky though isn't it?

Galaga...

There are a couple of critical tips to get a good score at this game ;)
First of all, DO NOT GET KILLED! Hehe, Obvious? Well it's important because you'll want to get as much accuracy as you can.

As long as you do not get killed and are about 80% accurate (overall) you will get a bonus attack wave of three ships in each level.
If you kill all three ships, you get an extra life.

This carries on level by level, at most I have had 5 extra lives in one game.

Another thing is the aliens at the top the drop down and fire a beam.
Let them capture you!!

It may sound crazy to you but after they capture you, the captured ship will appear above that alien, when you kill that alien the captured ship will drop down next to your ship doubling your firepower.

Tetris.

Always start on level 7.
Aim for 4 in a row up until level 11 and then just concentrate on keeping it clear.
The pieces reach a terminal velocity at about level 11 if you start at level 7 and never get faster, so in theory you could score millions (I managed about 300,000 before losing concentration).

Puzzle Bobble.

Success at this game hinges at about level 7, I am not sure exactly which one it is, I think it's 7.

Anyway, the bubbles have no gaps between them and there are about 6 rows of them.
This level is deceptively difficult.
To clear it, you MUST concentrate on the edges and get as deep into the structure as you can.
Do not be rushed, you have about 10 seconds to aim and shoot each bubble ;)

Assuming you pass this level, further on in the game you'll come to another level where the bubbles are arranged with a shape like this;

 :) ;D :) :) :) :) :) ;D :)
 :) :) ;D :) :) :) ;D :) :)
 :) :) :) ;D :) ;D :) :) :)
 :) :) :) :) ;D :) :) :) :)
 :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Where the  ;D are blue in colour!
It is possible to score over 3,000,000 on this level.
If you have all lives intact, open up the front row to get access to the blue bubbles.

Then build up as much bubbles as you dare without blocking the access to the blue one.

When you get a blue one, fire it in and clear the pattern of blues causing a huge chain reaction and scoring you over 1,000,000

Then commit suicide if you have more lives left and repeat until you are down to your last life ;)

There are later levels you can do this on too for even more points, I'll let you find them for yourself :P

Frogger 2.

This is a deceptively difficult game and ultimately there is a level that is so difficult that you WILL die.

In one level the river dissapears, in others there are fast moving cars, snakes and even pirhanna fish.

The killer though is the one where the road is covered in Ice.

I am convinced that this is virtually impossible, so you must maximise the score on each level :)

Make sure that you collect as many hitch hiker frogs as possible!
You will see purple coloured frogs on some logs, always hop onto these as you get a bonus when you make it home.

Also be aware that you can carry more than one at a time :)

Move over as quick as possible, time counts towards score.
I do not think that a score over 40,000 is possible in this game if you are a mere human being, but you should be able to get quite close to that.

Mahjong Scoring System.

There is a lot you can do in this game and scores of 500 + aer possible.
First you need to select a level with a lot of tiles. The more tiles the better.

There are two wildcard sets of tiles.
One set has seasons on it
One has fruit.

Make sure that you match these perfectly wherever possible!

For example it is possible to match;

Spr with Aut

But you score more for matching Spr with Spr and Aut with Aut.

This is all you need to know to score big at this game :)
