Fancy procedural graphic simulations to try.
« on: November 06, 2007 »
Recently I've been interested in procedural computer art.

Things like computer generated mazes and Conway's game of life are very appealing to me. They use rules and algorithms to make a sort of art.
What graphic procedural art is there to explore with the aid of a computer?

I have always thought about making procedural textures like these: http://www.filterforge.com/ but I have no clue where to begin or how complicated it would be.

Hi,

well its a huge subject. There are plenty of things on this board if you dig. Try searching for anything by "mind", downloading , running. Try searching for chladni too. Then pop over to Paul Bourkes website and have a look at IFS. Then look up L-systems (lindenmeyer systems) on his web pages too. Almost everything in 4ks (except music) is procedural. Try searching for structure synthesis. MOst 64ks are procedural and all contain some procedural elements.

Basically its a huge subject.

And once you have researched all the many excellent things about Chladni, iterated functions systems etc you could vary the textures even more (some of the images on the page Zawran posted are interesting) by applying some demo style effects onto them..

This one here for example;

http://www.filterforge.com/filters/216.html

I'd bet you could make something similar to this using warp feedback once you had the texture.

Be sure to check out most of that site, Hugo Elias has some really nice ideas.

Ah but do be careful. Procedural graphics is one thing, chains of filters for textures is not procedural graphics. EG blur isnot procedural nor is edge detect. That said, I dont know if you guys really want to know about procedural graphics or just how to write cool texture generation.

I wrote an intro to procedural graphics a while ago over at in4k...
