Well. I had a nice holiday in Melbourne!
And it's nice to be back... and see some new topics in my favorite area - Yabasic!
I was wondering if anyone can help me with a huge problem with my laptop.
I got back from Melbourne yesterday, and while I was sleeping, my brother used my laptop to browse the internet (as out home desktop was still locked away). He went to a page, and it asked him to update DivX... so he downloaded and completed the update... then he proceeded to download the video he so muchly wanted to get.
He told me, at this point, either Internet Explorer stopped, or Windows Explorer. Anyway, he canceled the download, and restarted my laptop.
Upon logging in, of all things - the annoying "Not Responding" dialog box appeared, with the message: "Windows Explorer has stopped working" (while attempting to collect information about what caused it to stop)... then it "Restarting Windows Explorer".
Once it restarts Windows Explorer, it repeats the Windows Explorer has stopped working and so on... He can't do anything, because everything is non-selectable while it is collecting information and restarting. So, he Ctrl+Alt+Delete and see what's going on... nothing suspicious. So he restarts the laptop...
Again and again - having to restart, only to see the annoying non-responsive screen and stopped working dialog box...
Is this a virus? Or something drastically wrong with my Windows?
If I insert a Vista install CD, and boot it, and select Repair, will that correct the problem?
Or is it non-fixable?
So sad... I loved that laptop! *Lets hope I can continue loving it

NB// I asked IT Help at work, and they seem to think it's a virus... heaven's forbid it... but I think so too.

Ok. So, I asked Google, and got some information. Which was good...
I ran Windows Defender - like the help on the Microsoft site suggested. But, it was running really really slow (as it would stop when Windows Explorer stopped and restarted)... after 3 hours, and 2 and a half million files were scanned... I decided to run command prompt and delete the stupid file I thought was the problem...
And! It worked. No more stopped Explorer... thankfully!!!
