It looks really impressive.  Personally I would have made the end joints slightly different, but the end result would have been the same.

I also had that idea but implimenting the mechanical parts would be difficult. You would be able to convert the up and down motion from a gear (circular motion) through to arm (linear motion) but dividing the beads apart would be diffucult I think.
