Internet Connection Keeps Dropping
« on: April 14, 2010 »
I have a Linksys ( cisco systems ) WA 54 GS router for Broadband, and am using Windows XP service pack 3 and recently find that my internet connection will go idle and then reconnect frequently throughout the day.

it seems like a coincidence but it seems to re establish it's self when I sit down at the PC, as if it's mind reading, it may be that I knock the mouse without realizing.

And was wondering if this is a fault of XP through some update of windows? Or that something isn't intalled correctly ( I have updated the firmware to latest version )

If you know of a solution, would be great to hear about it,

Cheers and all the very best,
Clyde

cyclic connect/disconnect... do you mean that your PC is dropping the connection? Or might it be the router itself? have you double checked the signal strenght? Interferences (microwave oven nearby... other WiFi networks)?

which firmware update do you mean? PC or Router?

try to downgrade the firmware you updated to the previous version... Keep in mind that "if something works, don't touch anything!" ?   ;-)

You can do many other test to ensure if it is a software (drivers or similar) or hardware failure... try booting with a linux live distro (Ubuntu just to name one)... or try a fresh install (this is the best way if you have a spare HDD laying around..)

Hope this helps...

I updated the firmware for the router but that was a while ago, my hunch is it's the PC aka XP.

Although saying that, the green internet light after a while either goes dim or the light is off, but I still can access the wide web, maybe 'cos I leave it on for most part of the day. Sometimes the thang resets itself.

I had a similar problem going back about a month ago.
I reset my router and all was well again (so far).
Make sure you have all the relevant cables / passwords before you do that though Clyde.

that's sounds odd...
double check your cables and such.. try a different PSU (if you have a spare one with identical specs... I had a dlink with a similar behaviour... I bought a brand new Zyxel and then, a couple months later, found that the wall-adapter was faulty.. tried with a similar PSU and the D-Link router came back to life... I'm still using it sometimes to do some tests).

Anyway: try resetting the router as Shockwave said (most of the times this helps)... if nothing happens try a friend's router for a couple of days... it you experience the same kind of troubles it could be your telco related problem... have you already asked your telco for info about that?

"Sobbing" connections are always difficult to troubleshoot if you don't have spare parts laying around to test/switch with... It's just a matter of search-and-replace or resetting your equipment...
