hello, electronics engineer and boring programmer here. want to use the skills for some fun, and i've always loved the demoscene but have yet to do a demo. the scene is not quite big where i live, yet i'd love to learn more and start coding more fun stuff.

Hey folks! I'm a hobbyist/student, my background as far as programming goes is pretty much solid in Visual Basic, with a bit of knowledge in a variety of other languages. I also like to do pixel art and compose electro/lofi/chiptune music. In the recent months I've become enthralled by the world of the demoscene (no surprise really given my interests). I hope to start making some demos of some kind and currently have made all of: A text scroller and a rotating cube. Ideally I want everything I do to be cross-platform so I've been doing most of my stuff in Realbasic. I'd love any advice of to be put in the right direction if there's anyone out here who specialises in demo making a la cross-platform or in Realbasic. Cheers!

Welcome Pickles42 - thanks for your introduction.

Well, speaking of desktop OS cross platform in general (Windows, Linux, Mac) - personally I like the SDL Lib which offers a lot already (not limited to demoscene productions).

Since you use basic - you might also want to check out Freebasic (a lot of users here are using it) or PureBasic which supports Amiga, Linux, Windows and Mac.

Greets, my name is Keith. I'm a hobbyist game developer.

I've been programming since about 92 or so... Started in Pascal, moved on to C, C++, C#, doing a few things in lua at the moment, made a few games in flash using the flashpunk library.

Even though I've been programming a long time I'm not very good. Always had a PC (originally running MS-DOS and now windows). I used to enjoy running demos that ran in DOS. Always thought that stuff was great. Saw some newer demos and they just don't have that style and panache that the old-school stuff has.

Have always wanted to code some really cool effects (mostly the old ones, like plasmas, fires, copper, etc) So finally I decided I would try to start.

I don't really have a place to start though. So I joined the forums in hopes to find some help in getting started. Right now I'm making games in love2d using lua, and I was trying to find out whether or not I could use it to make some cool pixel-stuff. Love and lua aren't really made for accessing things at the pixel/buffer level (although I can access image data with it), so I'm considering other options. SDL maybe or something.

In any case I hope to be a bit more active in the future.

I've joined this forum just so I can download attachments

, but you make us write an introduction so here it is.
Ive been coding on and off for years and Im still crap. With one big off period for about 12 years, put it down to...um...a misspent youth
I have a SHOCKING memory and make a thousand mistakes a day, but I love code and nothing is more rewarding than beating myself (how many of you just had a rude thought?).
I LOVE demos. Demos are what made me want to learn how to code, when I first saw one I thought "now theres an art I might be able to learn"....ofcourse I couldnt

, but I did learn to code thanks to my first two amazing teachers who persevered through my problems because of my passion. They were both demo scene guys and altho I cant handle the maths or anything I can code thanks to them....but most of the time Im still a ripper. But atleast one that never takes credit for others work, Im just having fun.
My first love is JS (especially Chrome and Chrome extensions), but Im looking at Basic (FreeBasic) at the moment as I want somthing to code in for windows stuff and I cant be bothered learning pascal again (shocking memory, forgot it again) so I thought Basic might be fun....someone needs to be sued over the naming of this language, basic it is not....JS is the most basic language.
Anywayz, that should do it.
