After yesterday, I know that a lot of people were surprised at events. Here is one fact that made me sit up and take notice of our plight.. The stats this month took a huge step back, only half the post count of the previous month.
Yesterday was very encouraging, lots of great posts, this is exactly what we need to raise this place to the next level.

Let's see if this trend can be carried on through March.

If the stats are encouraging and we have managed to recruit 10 more members this month I will put up another competition with a cash prize. How's that? A bit of bribery!!! Hehe.

Also stay tuned this month as I am going to start the series of tutotials I've been putting off for ages.

Funny, that, about the posts. Companies work out that way too. Amount of business changes before and after christmas.
I'd like to see how you'll handle the tutorials because I reckon a small showcase demo would help - it would have helped me.
I'll never be a good programmer, I just think it's cool and understand enough to keep up the interest.

from my point of view, alot of activity was lost when me and taj founded introvert and rbraz joined, thus you basically "lost" us because we were so busy with our current projects and tools.. then we had the compo over at II which most likely ate alot of time for people thus making sure they didnt have time to post around here.. however the compo is over(gratz on first btw shockie) so i have a feeling most of the people involved will return to active duty here on dbf

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to come accross as a Post fanatic or anything. I look at the stats sure, but they don't really bother me unless I can see that the posts have dipped by over 1,000 a month or something crazy like that. And the only reason I generally look at the stats is if I am going through the board and I can see something like 40 people had logged on in the course of that day and there were like 30 new posts.

What I have found in the past is that generally there are maybe about 10-15 people who contribute loads to the forum, lots of posts, source code etc, and then there are a lot of other users who will come onto the board and benefit from what had been posted but hardly ever comment on anything.

What I mean is that it's not fair really on those who got into the spirit of things, and a lot of lurking harms the board.

According to the download counter, this was downloaded 57 times. Nowhere like that amound of people have commented to tell Rbraz "cheers" or even "I can't use this because of x,y and z"..

I can see this happening a lot, I've considered a few measures to stop it.

I could stop people downloading attachments if they have no post count, I could display visual warnings to those who didn't post enough, I could go through the board and delete all the one line replies, I could stop guests browsing the board unless they were logged in.

There would be no point in any of that I think.

If I implimented stuff like that then it would definately change the atmosphere of this place for the worse. As usual, the people who put the most into this community have posted their support for it, the lurkers haven't bothered. This is really aimed at them. If you read something and have an opinion, post!

Nobody bites here, everyone is friendly and you might get more out of the place.

Am I being unrealistic? Part of me thinks I am too optimistic that making a post like this would cause people who are too selfish to support a community that they get a lot out of to post, but it is worth a try, it has to be
If this doesn't work then I will have to think of other ways.

Forum lurking is harmful, eh. I'm glad I was able to contribute something after I felt I was using so much. After spending a couple of years on PS2 Yabasic, I ran into a wall and spent ages on the 'net looking to see if anybody else had played with Yabasic - since I couldn't get anyone I knew interested. Then I found (cough) ezboard and lurked there for a few months. I finally joined and showed some of my stuff. Now I'm doing that here, when I'm inspired enough, because I'm only an ideas man. I forgot I had joined in september and looked again in december - now I realize, whoops.

In fact you even entered the last competition. It feels good to have something in the list of stuff being voted on.
I am a firm advocate of getting out of something the effort that you put into it, you prove this.

It's strange what inspires people. Take me for instance. I'll let a problem just sit in my head and go do something else. Then, when I'm asleep usually, I'll perk up with ideas and try them out - until I'm left with one or two I can work with.

Although I don't think I fit into the lurker group, I may very well be a closet lurker. I suppose I dont post here anywhere near as much as I ought to. I do spend a lot of time looking over the board, and I reckon I've probably seen everything that everybodys produced since I joined, however I dont seem to post back with a response some times. It seems that if I don't check the board for a few days, I don't want to add anything on the end of a post that may well have gone out of day so to speak.... Well anyways, I start a new job as I.T. Manager next week, rather than doing field service stuff, so hopefully I'll have more time in the office. And I even get an hour for dinner, which is much better than stuffing my face at macdonalds at 3.30 in the afternoon coz thats the first chance I've had to eat.... Anyways this is getting to the point of rambling way off topic, so if you find that water torture thing shocky i'd be willing to subject myself as punishment, and I promise to try and be more pro-active on this great board....

It's interesting why there are hang-ups about posting in threads that are more than a day old though. In fact I've found myself doing that in other places. There shouldn't be a reason for that but it does happen.

Thing is, some topics come to the natural end of thier lives, some die before they are due to die. I caught myself yesterday. I was looking through the community projects forum and noticed that I hadn't commented in two of hotshot's entries to the comp. One was a gradient coloured scroll, the other rwas a starwars scroll.

The gradient scroll was ok, the starwars scroll was actually excellent and looked much better than the one I had done, so I added my comments, sure they were late but hopefully Hotshot can pick them up when he looks through there and they might be a nice surprise for him. I actually felt quite bad about it, because he supported the comp, the least I can do is to say thanks for posting them.

Cheers Shocky, just reading the other post, about dbf being dead, and I'd like to say that although that saddens me, the fact that you wish to devote your time to this board has also shaken me to get rid of my closet lurkerness.... Thanks for supporting this board the way you do.... Lets move up a gear
