CLASSIC COMP : MIRACLE NEW STUFF
« on: April 25, 2007 »
a test with freebasic and big gfx :
http://www.flashtro.com/page.php?id=575 - http://www.intro-inferno.com/production.php?id=2598

all versions packed
all versions nopack/others packs

first version : more gfx, because lazy code... I'll try with less gfx and a better code  ;D
and perhaps a C version for comparison

I have a doubt about the music. original sid is called sometimes "romeo_knigt_ii". It seems that "monster" by Tip/DualCrew is a remix...

update: nc,upx, aspack, mew versions and a new version with logo move fixed
update2 : uFmod fixed + 640x480 test version
update3 : windowed/fullscreen version added (freebasic + C "_tptc")
final update : finally, I made the version 2 with less gfx (and a little bit more code), like original intro. (v1 is still available in zip...if you want...)

Screenshot looks great!  Sadly it won't run here on Vista - have you used an exe packer?  what screen res are you trying to set?

Lots of video cards/screens won't do 320x240.  In my demo I try to set 320x240 and if that fails, I try to set 640x480 and when I copy the screen I do a blit scale.

Hi bbear - thanks for the 640 version it runs beautifully!  (320 unpacked still not working, I think because my LCD won't do that).

strange that lcd don't like 320x240 in fullscreen (regression ?)
so, I'll add a resolution test

My laptop wont run the lowres versions either Bbear, but it's not a problem with your code, it's because the hardware will not support those resolutions, for safety it's good to render in 320 X 240 and then expand to 640 X 480. Having said that, including lowres versions is definately cool. The lowres ones run fine on my desktop :)

what you mean by render in 320x240 and expand to 640x480 ?
for example, in freebasic (see the Horizon code), I made 2 versions : one in 320, and another in 640. all vars are only *2.
In C, by default, all vars are in lores and I only change a Zoom variable. all vars are *Zoom. If you select 640, zoom=2 else zoom=1.

have you an example of rendering in 320 and expand to 640 ?

It's only in fullscreen, I think ?

You do what you said.

Create a 640X480 screen, Create a 320 * 240 buffer and copy it to the screen buffer *2 or even write your render routines to draw *2.

The main thing is that 320X240 is an unreliable resolution these days, if you are going to support it then you should do it the way you have, by including other versions.

640X480 is safe and runs just about on everything.

My point was that you shouldn't feel bad about your code, if some peoples gfx cards don't allow 320X240 then there's not a lot you can do about it, it's not your fault.
