[HARDWARE QUESTION] TFT 19" + WLAN ROUTER

Hi guys.

When it comes to hardware I am a total noob. However, I think about buying a new TFT monitor for my
computer at home. At work I have two SAMSUNG SyncMaster 940BF and acutally I am rather
pleased with them ... but I do not have any real comparision to other TFT's. So my question is - are there
other brands next to Samsung and models you can recommend

My main task is coding I guess. Although watching demos and maybe playing a shooter requieres some good
refresh time / contrast. The Samsung monitor has a refresh time from 2ms AFAIK.

Speaking about TFT monitor - how about a 16:9 monitor - can you recommend that format for coding

The other question is about a wireless router. I have a normal DSL modem at home with cable. But I want my
desktopcomputer and my laptop with wireless internet. What do I need - what can you recommend. The
farest distance between the dsl-modem and my desktopcomputer is approx. 10m with one wall in the middle.

I thought about the RANGEMAXX from Netgear - but again - I am a hardware noob - any help / hints are highly
appreciated.

( Note : I read a lot of comments on amazon about various products - but they all relly differ from each other.
One writes a certain monitor is totally cool - the other person says that the same monitor sucks. I trust you
guys here - that's why I ask )

I've got a 20" Viewsonic (2025wm) and a 22" AOC.  The defining characteristic of these screens is that they were both really cheap! (under A$400)  Both have a bit of backlight leakage (the light leaks into the display where it should be black), but they're fantastic compared with a CRT and I wouldn't go back.  Widescreen is great for coding.  They're both 1680x1050 res - not quite enough for true HD, but very standard.  They're very bright and Cleartype looks great on them.

I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.  Not terribly impressed with it, it seems to crash a fair bit.  Again, it was pretty cheap, and it hasn't annoyed me enough to buy a replacement.

Thanks for the info. Concerning the monitors. Are you using both monitors at the same time
with one computer (dual screen) I use two monitors at work and love it. But both monitors
are identically.

@topic wlan router:

Just bought and installed Netgear WLAN Router WGT624 and I just can say that the
installation was pretty easy - so far I am also very happy with the connectivity. So,
this problem is solved now.


Nevertheless, browsing through the computer store - I realized some nice subnote-
books. Does anyone own one ? AFAIK the majority comes with a gfx card on the chip
with shared memory ? How is the performance ( I know - I don't expect to run modern
games on it )  - But does older demos like "Heaven 7" run on it ?

Would be interesting to know ...

With the built in graphics (not nVidia or ATI) watch to make sure that it has geometry acceleration and shaders, else it won't be able to run much of anything.  Very, very few of those integrated graphics chips support DirectX9 properly, though this is changing as it's needed to run Vista nicely.
Depends how 'sub' the notebook is

Never thought about this and the VISTA requiresment. Thanks for the information.
Do you know some specific models you can recommend ? There are just a few in
our local computer stores unfortunately ... and even in the internet you find mostly
standard 15.4" notebooks.

Thanks. That's indeed useful. If I buy a subnotebook - I think I will try to get
one with WindowsXP just to get sure ...

I'm probably a little late, but i have the Netgear WPN824 and I'm very pleased, it hasn't ever crashed but when i update the server lists in steam it locks up till you either restart the modem, steam or the router. but it's ok if you stop it at 1000 servers or so.
