c64 sound generator lib?
« on: August 12, 2007 »
On the FreeBasic board, Sim_Piko posted wanting to know if there was a way to get FB to create sound using the data from this page:

http://www.in.fh-merseburg.de/~schmidtc/Boulder/sounds.html

So, naturally I though of you guys. Since I first stared posting here I have seen a couple of posts on this board from people making oldschool sound synth libs, but will any of them let you directly create sounds from the program using that data, or do they all need to load files in a certain format?

Usually when a coder writes a softsynth the best method is to let the musician use their tracker of choice and then the songdata is loaded into the program to work with the pre-programmed instruments.

Emulating the C64 Sid chip is a pain in the arse apparently but it's something I am interested in too.

My guess would be that Slippy will be the first person to have SID emulation in this community.

are you looking for a SID-emulation or just C64-like sounds? there are other ways to "simulate" SID sounds... several other formats like the YM (Atari format, based on YM2149 chipset) convey such C64-like sounds.. and the player routine is available too..

Moreover, Jochen Hippel and some other well-known C64 music composers have adapted their classics to this format

Let me know

It all seemed so right
So young and so eager
No end in sight
But now we are prisoners
In our own hearts
Nothing seems real
It's all torn apart

Well, the guy who originally posted about this just wanted to be able to play the sounds in that page I linked to

For myself, what I wanted was something like what redcrab just posted on the FB board:
