hello and... whats best? Free or Pure?
« on: September 13, 2007 »
hi,

Firstly, i'd like to say thanks for this great site and forum.

I've been wanting to code an intro or something for a long time now and this might just help!

I haven't had much experience with high level languages like C++, pascal, basic etc for years and even when I did I wasn't that good.  I now do a lot of web programming with php, javascript etc.

The thing is i'm thinking of try to write some intros/demos but not sure what to use.  I want something that will give me quck results and not be as hard as C++ (taking into account opengl etc).  I have tried blitz basic before and it seemed quite good but now I see FreeBasic and PureBasic.  I'm thinking one of these may be the best to start with but i'm unsure which.  Can anybody give pros and cons between the two?

I've thought about sharpening my action script skills and writing demos in that as it'll be more platform independant and future proof.  But flash does have its draw backs, compiled demos always seem better and exe's seem pretty cool.

Anyway, nice to be here and I hope I can get atleast on intro started... erm finished  :||

lol woops, just seen 'the welcoming committee' thread, sorry! although this is a question really.

Hi Housey, welcome to the forum :)

I reccomend Freebasic because it's fast enough for demos and intros, makes small code and it's free!

Also you'll be able to use lots of methods for rendering to the screen and there's a ton of source code around here for it.

There are beginners that have made a real success of C++ too so maybe you shouldn't count that out.

Assuming you want to go for Freebasic, you could follow the first 3 tutorials here;

To get you started :)

Then we can start showing you how to do stuff.

:hi: Housey! :D

Free Basic on the one hand costs nothing.
And you can use it as a stepping stone into C languages.

Hello Housey, I think you're best off trying FreeBasic.
What kind of demos are you looking to write - what kind of effects?

@Housey:
First ...  :hi: on board.

Although I never coded in FreeBasic I think FreeBasic might be worth looking at. Especially
when you want to start intro coding FreeBasic and this forum seems to be a very good start.

Feel free to post your questions / code snippets here.

Hi all and thanks for the welcome!

I think I will have a look at FreeBasic and follow the tutorials here and see what I can come up with.  To be honest I will be happy if I can get a small intro together (with scroller, starfield and logo) and then see how I progress after that.

thanks again and see you around for tips and advice!  8)
