VS2005 IDE problems
« on: September 18, 2007 »
I'm a bit puzzled with my VS2005 (pro version - got a copy from my company *gg*) installation lately.

I don't know if it's me who's provocating the troubles which occure or if it's the latest VS2005 IDE patch (which came with my Windows update a few days ago) ... almost all of my newly created stuff fails here or there ... and the debugging is not really objective - a whole bunch of random causes each time I try to debug a project ...
(btw. this behaviour is one of the main reasons for the delayed release of my latest libraries atm.)

So my main question to you guys is:

a.) do you have some project templates with "cure"/"healthy" settings (e.g. path to DX lib included in DEBUG/RELEASE version a.s.o.) and perhaps a "crinkler" build version around which you may want to share ? :)

b.) and how do I setup them up in my VS2005 IDE so that I could choose them on new project creation directly?

and

c.) do you have similar probs the last days?

Perhaps my Vista installation is somehow f*cked up ... I dunno and I'm really confused ... but a.) and b.) would help me figuring out if I'm the one who's too dumb atm :)

Thanks in advance ...

 O0

What kind of problems are you seeing?  I've had some 2005 probs, some video probs, some driver probs and some Vista probs :)  Are you using a dual core CPU?  Pick one (or more) ;)

Still, I can use 2005 on Vista and do my normal work...

Hey Jim,

I'm really not sure what my probs caused lately ... in fact I could compile stuff a few days ago without any problems ... Yesterday (after fiddeling around for hours) I found out that my Windows Update had a VS2005 update for me ...

Well - today, after thinking about for hours, I re-installed my Windows XP and dropped my Vista install for the moment ... currently I'm in the process of setting up my (freshly) installed system and I hope that my probs are gone with this step ... :|

Perhaps when MS will release SP1 for Vista I'll go back ... but I've had to much trouble with the OS lately ... although I must admit that Vista is somewhat really nice ... and I enjoyed having it for the last 5 months ...

Now - at the time of writing - my system comes back to its full speed its supposed to have :)

I have a dual core AMD X2 5000+ with 2GB RAM ... :)

I'll let you know if I still run into the same problems after setting it all up here :)

Cheers,

Can you describe the problems you were having?  I know going back to XP fixes it for now, but this Christmas XP will be gone and the world will be Vista only.  My aim is to know as many bugs by then as possible, so I can help people out.

It's a bit hard to describe but my current projects suddenly seemed to not compile correctly(!) anymore.

Without changing any line of code and just recompiling them I ran into crashes ... activating the debugger caused in several non-reproducible "write access" errors - the funny thing about this was the fact that each time I restarted the debugging the crash was caused from a different line of code ... strange stuff, eh?

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the VS2005 update a few days ago - but it's at least a possibility ...

Well ... christmas this year XP will be gone??! No support anymore??!

XP will be supported for years, in fact until 8th April 2014(!) but Microsoft will stop selling any new copies on Jan 31st 2008.
