How are your coding skills?
« on: September 21, 2007 »
Hi everybody... i am not sure if the topic fit to the following stuff. I know here are some very talented coders on the forum and i would like to know about your coding skills using C/CPP... How good are you in C/CPP, Win32 API, OOP coding? How much experience / knowledge do you have and what note from 0 to 10 (0 = nothing / 10 = full) would you give yourself?

Code: [Select]
Answer questions a,b,c only with a point system from 0 to 10  (0 = null / 10 = god ^^)

a) How good are you in C/CPP coding And what IDE are you using...?
b) How good are you, using Win32 API only...?
c) How good are you in OOP And procedural coding...?

Please answer following questions...

1) Have you ever worked on a bigger project? Some infos?
2) Have you ever worked in a team/teamwork project?
3) How much time could you spend in your sparetime For a hobbyproject?

I am sure the infos would be very interested... thx...

a) (1-2) Using VC++2005 express, can get by on the coding side but hardly looked into using much in the way of any libs/includes or anything yet.

b) (2) That's about all I've used so far but it's all a bit mixed up from bits and pieces I've picked up here and there. (Thanks to Jim for a lot of it)

c) (2) Not touched OOP at all so far. Procedural, got myself into that habit with FB which helped a huge amount in moving onto c++.

1) Not worked on any big projects unless you call what I've been doing for the past few years 1 big project.

2) Tried a couple of times but never anything all that well organised or planned.

3) No idea, time comes and goes.

a) How good are you in C/CPP coding And what IDE are you using...?

I can make simple console apps and that's about it so far, I understand quite a lot of the syntax, I'd need to spend a good few weeks before I could begin to write something worth releasing though. Maybe 2/10

b) How good are you, using Win32 API only...?

Ehm! I don't understand the question really... 1/10

c) How good are you in OOP And procedural coding...?

I tend to be more of a procedural coder although I understand how to create and use objects, procedural coding I will give myself 6/10 and oop 3/10

1) Have you ever worked on a bigger project? Some infos?

Depends what you mean by big project.. I've written hundreds of demos in various languages and a few games too.

2) Have you ever worked in a team/teamwork project?

All my work is made with gfx artists and musicians, I have colaberated with other coders on some things too.

3) How much time could you spend in your sparetime For a hobbyproject?

Not much spare time to spend, thie forum takes up any time I do not spend with my family or coding :)

a) I'm a 9 at C and a 6 at C++.  I almost exclusively use Visual Studio .NET 2005.  Or notepad :)

b) I know a lot of the Win32 API, but it is VAST, so I reckon a 7, but when you need something new, it's easy to pick it up.

c) I think my code comes out in a logical way, I'll give myself an 8.

1,2) In the past I've worked with anything from 1 to 40 other engineers on the same project.  I've also written some pretty monster pieces of code on my own :)  Anyway, multi-million-lines-of-code projects, GB of data.

3) Not so much time, because I do my hobby for a job :(, but I enjoy coding little bits for this forum.  You might be surprised to hear I learn a lot here too - I don't always know the answers to people's questions until I go and research the problem for myself.

Please answer following questions...

1) The biggest project is teaching myself Freebasic ( and still ongoing ) when crossing over from Blitz. Kaos is a nice example of this.

2) Yep, I'm now a team called Gravity, Formelly in DBF.
3) Not as much time as I'd like due to my back.

a) regarding C/C++ I would give me a 5-6 ... my fave IDE is VS2005 and DevCPP ...
b) to be honest if I use Win32 API coding I use the MSDN to give me some quick examples ... thus I'd give me 3-4 here
c) my origins from work are Java (J2SE and J2EE) I did a whole bunch of projects there - well, for Java OOP I'm a 9 ... procedural coding ... I used to code 68k asm back in 1991-1995 ... that WAS procedural ... so I'd give me a 7-8 here

1 and 2) I can second Jim here ... mainly business / web applications using J2EE (JBoss, Tomcat aso) with huge DBMSses - since 2002 I work for a company called "dynetic mobile solutions" which enabled web applications for mobile phones (one of our bigger customers is for example ebay germany) - I use to be project-/team manager and I'm entitled "Senior application developer" ...
3) as I became daddy (for a second time) in april this year I just gave myself a 1-year-break from work ... so called "Elternzeit" :) So - beside managing my two little kids I have quite a few hours per day spending on my hobby projects ....

Please answer following questions...

1) Have you ever worked on a bigger project? Some infos?

Various Project depending on ME !

2) Have you ever worked in a team/teamwork project?

Yes I did a teams of Group who were making RPG games but I drop out due to STUPID Spolit BRAT boy who alway think about himself and not the teams.
It was pain in the ASS to work in team. If Person want to code a game then it better to do it themself unless You got REALLY GOOD TEAM that work for TEAM knowing what plan A is and plan B and plan C  then make them together a GAME! (I am sure you know what I mean)

3) How much time could you spend in your sparetime For a hobbyproject?

My sparetime? Yeah I do have that sometime as it depend on me on whatever I want to do.
I am sticking to one programming Language which is Blitz 3D or Blitz Max.

At the moment I am doing 3D WORLD STUDIO for modelings Map( which I am getting better) and there will be COBRA 3D Demo for me to try out tomorrow.

cheers

a) How good are you in C/CPP coding And what IDE are you using...?
Id say i'm a 3 at C and 2 at C++, but I'm practicing :) I mostly use VC++2005 express and a bit of Dev C++

b) How good are you, using Win32 API only...?
Not good. I can change the size of the console window, change colours, make a program sleep. And thats about it. So I guess its a 1 :'(

c) How good are you in OOP And procedural coding...?
I suck at OOP, better at procedural tho. Say, 6 and 2.

1) Have you ever worked on a bigger project? Some infos?
Yep but I never finish them. I'm currently working on an image filtering program in C++.

2) Have you ever worked in a team/teamwork project?
Nope, not yet.

3) How much time could you spend in your sparetime For a hobbyproject?
For me that varies wildly.

I love it! I had to write some code in an emergency at work recently as I'd run out of engineers. It was Java and I dont know eclipse so I sat down with notepad. Almost all the engineers were having a good time giggling at the boss for being so cave-man. Now I know I'm not the only one and given your coding skills Jim, I'm quite happy about it.

Now I seriously hope you weren't joking ;-)

I have to karma that. You made my day.

      OO, 3, procedural 8

Please answer following questions...

1) Have you ever worked on a bigger project? Some infos?
      I managed an OGL driver with >0.5 million lines of assembler - that was interesting. The products we ship now have about 2 million lines of code.
2) Have you ever worked in a team/teamwork project?
      I've managed software projects with up to 25 engineers on one project and several of those at one time.
3) How much time could you spend in your sparetime For a hobbyproject?

      Could or do? On average about 1-2 hours a day but at peak times, maybe 6 hours a day.

No, not joking about notepad...sometimes I don't even bother with that...

Open a command prompt:
copy con test.c
#include <stdio.h>
int main(void) { printf("hello world\n"); return 0; }
^Z

;D

      OO, 3, procedural 8

Hmm I have just studied our companies C programming test. Also I was trying to figure out some complex debugging stuff recently and failed - how to put this - completely. Therefore I now downgrade:

C: 5.5, C++:1, WinAPI:1, OO:2, proc:6
