Yahoo! Widget... Vista Gadget
« on: November 09, 2007 »
Hmm.
My boss found Yahoo! Widgets.
So... I know someone who knows how to make Vista Gadets great, so we will get her to make a Version 1.2 release of our spunky Live Stream Gadget (for Vista) adding cool new features like: Volume Control, Live Track Info Updates, *do you guys have any others?* And then just port it over *attempt* to the Yahoo! format.

That means we can provide a Vista (Genuine) Sidebar Gadget, an XP Gadget (running through Yahoo! Widget App), and a Mac Gadget (running through Yahoo! Widget App)... wow! reaching out to 3 formats. Hopefully it'll work.

I'll give you guys a post when all three are done (or at least the new Vista version).

Thanks!

what about doing this as an Opera widget and drop all these USELESS ONE PLATFORM ONLY formats ?

Opera widgets are the basis for the widget standardization process at the W3C, and they work on all platforms : Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Nintendo Wii, Archos, ... and soon on mobile phones ....

Oh and if you worry about having to install Opera to use its widget, don't worry. Installing Opera makes little difference than installing an incompatible widget player. Beside although it includes a standard compliant browser, mail client, bitTorrent client, newsreader, rss/atom reader, widgets player, notes, ...Opera is still smaller than most standalone widgets players.

Nice opera widgets availbale.

But in general - what's the benefit of widgets in general ?
Having a platform (cross platform) to code in javascript  ? Or is there any more ?

1. relaxed security model compared to normal webpages : you can mashup all day long, XHR works on any external domain
2. chromeless window : more freedom for the pixel monkeys
3. based on open web standards ( html, css, js, xml, svg, canvas, sse, audio, mathml, ... ) : anyone and his dog should be able to make a widget.
