The next competition.
« on: December 27, 2007 »
It's not going to be a demo competition :P

Next time it will be a game writing competition but don't start yet! :) Just thinking about time scales and stuff and what sort of game it should be...

Cool Idea! Setting clear rules is always hard with games.

Cool. Game writing competition. I like the idea.

However, since most of us are not into game programming that much - I wouldnt
make too many restriction concerning the game itself. Maybe just a theme or so ...

Just my 2cts.

There are many places specialising in games writing...ok if we do one compo on games, but please lets stay demo oriented here!

Perhaps an interactive demo, where the graphical effects are part of the game, and you can play to change things or leave it alone to just watch it. It should be possible to combine the two. But I am up for anything. I just only started programming again after a very long break. I was going to do something for that christmas thing, but stuff got in the way, and time wasn't there. I doubt that I will be too busy in January though :)

It will be a very simple idea, Once I am sober again I'll draw it up, I think you'll like it :)

Couldn't agree more, please don't worry, the focus here is not going to change at all.

I've had some ideas rattling around in my head, but have yet to start on anything. This should be fun. In keeping with P_O tradition is should kick in balls while offering lollipops.

We ran a 25-line game comp on the yabasic forums and it was awsome.  Don't panic!

Jim
PS. Unfortunately, the search on that forum sucks balls so I can't find the entries...

i wasnt around the old forum when that comp was going on, but i remember looking through the entries and wishing i had taken part.

i think it was a dude called trickykeyboard that won with a dance revolution style game is that right?

anywho i think it would be cool.

-edit it was tappi who won with the dance game here is a link for anyone intrested.

a size restricted compo would be cool for yabasic users except it wouldnt suit those who use some languages because of declarations. Yabasic only requires that arrays be declared so 25 lines of code was a great idea for that compo. This compo should be fair to all users but i will gladly take it into consideration when voting if someone were to do a game in as few kb or as few lines of code as possible.

Edit:

It would be great if it were a restriction that each game had to have a cracktro included

Right. What rain_storm says. I think such a 25-line-competition might be nice but this
would force the user to a certain language. And I guess this would reduce the number
of entries enormously.

...
It would be great if it were a restriction that each game had to have a cracktro included

Whoo ... a game plus a cracktro - too much IMHO. How about writing a game in
the first competition - and doing something like a trainer / cracktro for a game of this
competition in the competition after the game competition ???

yeah i had thought about the 25 line game comp and i guess it would be hard for other languges to achieve.

i think fb could do it though as well as a couple of other languges i might try to do one myself.

I would rather make a quality game than have the contest itself in the game making process.

I have the idea for it, I hope you'll all like it :) At the moment there are about 2 dozen things I need to do at home, I will hopefully be able to format the post and get the comp announced tonight, but probably tomorrow evening will be more realistic as I want to send out a newsletter at the same time to get more people back on the forum!

Sorry for the delay folks :) A little bit of build up doesn't hurt any though eh?
