[procedural] Psycho

I don't know if this even qualifies as procedural - everything is generated realtime so i guess it is in a sense.

Paul: as far as MAV goes..... ??? a friend of mine can't run it either? What are system specs?

Because of crap coding and bass.dll you must exit with escape key not by the X on window, sorry.

That's really fast man. Are you using the music to generate the images? It kind of looks like it so I can't be sure. :p

MAV at startup on Vista :(
It would be cool if you could fix that Ghost - I suspect there's a few pixels being drawn outside the screen which is causing it.

Are you using writepixelfast anywhere at all Ghost?

if this is roughly the same code as i remember then its b3d with diffrent textures combined onto a sphere surface. i remember having some trouble trying to get the texture generation to stay inside the texture bounds when i tryed porting it to ogl.

i get a mav too. but it is cool from my memory.

Going to fire up my ughh! Vista Machine this weekend and see if i can find the MAV culprit.
Perhaps pixel writing outside of video memory is problem.

Yes Shocky writepixelfast is used

sorry to break it to you, but using pre-genetrated music in order to generate graphical patterns is nowhere near procedural generation imo... just so you know.. i didnt bother disasembling your code but you said it yourself, that the music was used to generate the main effect..

I do not really agree... if sound data is used as a parameter to generate a bitmap (e.g. use PCM data or filtered version, like FFT, etc. to "drive" the bitmap drawing algorithm)

The generation of something on a computer is a completly deterministic process. Even a so-called random function can be predicted. The numbers generated by a random function are just as random as a waveform from a music file... they both are signal generators. The "random" function numbers are generated by an algorithm, so is the music. Except it's human-brain-based algorithm

my random 2 cents
We once had a passion
It all seemed so right
So young and so eager
No end in sight
But now we are prisoners
In our own hearts
Nothing seems real
It's all torn apart

What Ghost has done is to synchronise graphics that have been generated within his own code to a song. This is perfectly fine and ok.

I would bet my house that he has in no way used sound data or fft to make the images, he's just used bass.dll to sync it in time with the music. Ghost is a gfxer by trade and I think there is a mis-understanding here.

There are no pre-generated graphics included here, everything is generated by the program .:. it's not only a valid entry to the challenge, it's a welcome one too.

Please pull the program off the contest thread. First off, the music dont generate the gfx. The gfx are generated totaly by code. And u not breaking nothing to me I know what procedural is!!!!
The music is used to change position of patterns. So guess that is bad to you? Anyway dont want to argue the efin point. I withdraw the program from the contest.

Bah, don't do that! For the record, I only meant to say it was cool that you were using the music spectrum in your algorithm... but I wasn't really sure if you were. ;)

Ok, first of all this entry is compliant, there is nothing wrong with it.
Ghost, you should not have to pull it.

If anyone has any concerns about a competition entry they should contact an administrator about it instead of upsetting another member of the board.

Seriously, those involved in this should relax and stop escalating this because you are just ensuring that if I see any more squabbling like this in a competition then I will stop running them.

Ghost, if you really want me to pull this entry from this competition then I will be very dissapointed. There is no need of it and your last post should have been sent via pm. Please dont spoil this competition by pulling your submission.

In general;

This incident has already ensured that it will be a long long time until I run another challenge.

If this persists I might consider that the attitude of board members towards each other had become hostile and in that case, the board would be closed without notice.

There is a protocol here where people are nice to each other on the forum, anyone who has a problem with any member of the board or any entry into a competition, the protocol is to contact an admin or a moderator about it in future please.

The concept is good, the code is better, and the board is best.

You've gone to the effort of coding a prod for this comp, in the spirit of this kickin board, and I certainly appreciate it, as I'm sure everyone else does.

Shockwave and the other mods have way too much class to scratch an entry for.... pause... for what?

There are 2 places on the interverse that I visit daily, and this is one of them, cause that atmosphere is intelligent and interesting.  I hope it stays that way.
