Horticulture Challenge!
« on: June 11, 2008 »

:carrot: Welcome to the Horticulture challenge! :carrot:

WTF?? Has this forum become gardeners question time? Well, no not really.. I was just thinking about watching plants growing and of how fantastic they look.. thinking of the way that they look, the way they grow, change, wither, die, flourish, transform the land....

What about making something alien? Or maybe in a cartoon style? Sub-Aqua?
Plant varieties are really diverse, you could even go down the sci-fi horror avenue if you wanted and make some triffids like the classic horror film!

You don't have to do it all with maths this time, but if you want to make some fractal trees, they are welcome too :)

:carrot: Here's the challenge then: :carrot:

Please make something that has a plant life theme, you can make any kind of entry, be it one effect, an intro, a demo, whatever you want as long as it contains computer simulated organic plant life, be it animation, growth or a rendered image of plants.

:|| Here are the rules!  :||

  • You may include graphics, please get permission if possible and at least credit the artist.
  • Your effect must be at least partially generated with your code... Eg. grabbing a picture of a vegetable garden and just displaying it = disqualification.
  • Previously released works are not allowed.
  • You may submit entries in the following formats:
  • win32exe - dos - Browsers (flash, Java, alambik etc.) - yabasic - amiga (as long as it runs on winuae) - atari st (as long as it runs on saint) - any format that runs on vice.
  • You may enter as many times as you like.
  • You may include sound in your entries. Please get permission from musician and/or at least credit them.
  • You MUST include a screenshot in your entry!
  • This competition is only open to members of this forum.
  • Please post your entries with the word [PLANTLIFE] in the title.
  • Entries may be posted between NOW and Midnight of [5th JULY 2008]
  • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users
  • You may NOT use other peoples code, except things like dlls, fmod, gl setup and other utilities.. You must list the tools/utility code you used.
  • Comments in entries are restricted to constructive criticism and general help.
  • ANY disputes with ANY entry should be raised via PM with an Admin in private.
  • In the event of a tie for first place there will be a poll to decide who gets the cash.
  • DO NOT post a thread as a place-holder without an entry attached to it.

:cherry: Here are the prizes!   :cherry:

  • 1st Place - Amazon voucher for £20 - Sig - 35 Karma
  • 2nd Place - Sig - 25 Karma
  • 3rd Place -  Sig - 15 Karma

So get your gardening gloves on and start planting!

My Yabasic flowers are now growing, and I'll add some bees to pollinate them soon.

Once I have the bees doing their job, I'll throw in the butterflies to make caterpillars to eat them.

Perhaps my entry should carry an age rating.

(edit)
My bees are in now, and they need a bit more work before they interact with the flowers fully, but the ground work is done.
The flowers now reproduce, but a bit too quick. Needs more work.
The butterflies now fitter from flower to flower laying eggs, but their life cycle needs more work.
The butterfly eggs and caterpillars are tricky little things to program. I might have to abandon them and just have the bees anbd flowers if I run out of time.

Yep, I'm definitely sitting this one out :(

I still can't think of anything to do, let alone have enough time to code the thing up.  Whenever I think about it, I can't help thinking about the wonderful things already submitted :D

I am really sorry guys, I had fully intended to enter this competition, this will be the first time I have not entered one of the competitions here, I simply have not had any spare time at all.

I'd like to wish everyone who has entered the best of luck in this challenge!

I will definately be entering the next one :)

@shocky:
Np, mate. You wrote a complete database driven PHP instead.
That's really cool, too. And we (competitors) have one combatant
less  :P

@xalthorn:
How is it going ? Do you manage to finish something in time ? I'll
keep my fingers crossed for you !

It's really not looking good...

What appeared to be a simple effect to pull off... well, isn't...

I'll bang my head against it until I complete it, but it's not looking like it will be in time to enter, so good luck one and all :D
