That's totally crazy.

Pixel Outlaw would have more to say about that I think... I'm no good at bullet hell games.

I read on here somewhere that the point of these games is to create beautiful looking bullet patterns and the actual collision area of the space ship is typically very small, maybe a two pixel square box!

Very true. Check this flight vid out (Ikaruga, level 4, hard mode. Really kicks in around the minute mark.

Hardest boss I ever fought was benoit from silent bomber. Only beaten him once, about 5-6 years after I got the sticking game! He was that tough!*

*Okay, yeah I got the game when I was like, ten, but I'd go back to it every 6 months or so for another shot at it!
I love semi-colons way too much ^^;

The first video mentioned is the game MUSHIHIMESAMA FUTARI. I have not had a chance to try it because it cannot currently be dumped or played via emulation and Japanese shooters NEVER get sent to the US because arcades are dying out VERY rapidly. Japan is still producing arcade games and it is still a very strong industry there. Both Mushihimesama and Ikaruga are arcade shmups and would have never been created without the Japanese arcade culture.  If you like Ikaruga you should also try the other big shmup by Treasure-Gradius V.

The Nintendo DS just got a port of Ketsui which is another bullet hell style game made by Cave, a well known and widely accepted shooting game company. The DS is region free so you can try the game on any system. The only problem is the 60 dollar price tag. The game is a light version of the arcade original. This port is lacking actual levels, it is rather what we call a "boss rush" game.

The funny thing is that the Japanese don't need to translate most of their shooters due to English menus. It seems like simple English is a cool novelty to them.

The hardest boss I've ever played would probably have to be something from a bullet hell game. I have played too many to nail down just one. Mushi's bosses are just plain coin eaters from what I can gather. Some people will agree that DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou is also hell. However the whole point of a shooting game is to complete it in one credit not keep feeding coins into it. I don't say I've beaten one unless I've done it with the first credit even on console versions.

If you want to try these games you have some options.

If you are really dedicated you can modify your system to play Japanese games however be aware that some import shmup games are going for hundreds of dollars used. If you have the money to invest your best bet is getting a Japanese system or modding yours. Also note that the European systems are completely different than the US and Japanese systems due to power and video differences. You cannot buy a Japanese system and plug it into a European outlet and television it will not work. However Americans and Japanese systems work on the same power and video.

Sega Saturn - region locked but does have DoDonPachi if you import or MOD
Dreamcast - Region free if you create a Utopia boot disk. A few bullet hell games.
PS2 - Mobile Light Force 2 + Castle Shikigami 2 in all regions, If you MOD chip there are MANY Japanese options.
XBOX - XBOX Live (Japanese) is getting a really great lineup
Wii - Has Castle Shikigami III and some older shooters via the Virtual console
PC - Also region free, there are many people who make "Doujin" games, which are hommade shooters and also there are a few professional ones too. There are also ways to emulate fairly modern arcade shooters via PC but this forum will not discuss where or how to do that in compliance with copyright restrictions. There are plenty of freeware games too and I have posted a link some time ago in the links section. Also probably any decent coder here could make a shmup, about the easiest genre to make but hardest to balance.

Well Shockwave said that I would have something to offer. ::) All I'm saying is that bullet hell games probably have the most fair but difficult bosses. Oh and Mushi and Dai Ou Jou are just bullet spam to most people.

I like side-scrollers in general. Normally try and stray from a lot of bullet hell, cause I'm not quite good enough yet, but Ikaruga is just such a bad-ass game I have to make an exception for it.

I can't remember the name of it, but there was a fantastic homebrew game a played on the PC a few years back. About a dozen boss-ships, one after another, each one getting stronger depending on how you attack it (attack the front, more front armour on next one, ect) and by the time you reached the last one, it was neigh on unbeatable and took up the entire screen. That game was brillaint. Karma to anyone who finds it.

Oh, and do please give us a list of good japanese PS2 shooters you know pixel, I have a JPS2 that's itching for new material!

Warning Forever might be it but it is an arena style shooter. I've attached a pic below. The gamne is AMAZING from a programming standpoint, free, and VERY stylish. The bosses evolve depending on how you destroy the earlier ones.

For a good list of shmups google 'SHMUPS! Xenocide files'.

P_O, I am just wondering, have you ever played this;

?

It's an Amiga game and is considered by many people to be one of the greatest shoot 'em ups ever released on the Amiga.

From a programmers point of view it is technically amazing, they have some incredible sprite routines going on there.

I realise that it's not exactly bullet hell, the Amiga couldn't throw that much stuff around the screen but the action gets quite intense.

The nearest thing to a bullet hell game that I have enjoyed is this;

You might want to fast forward the video on closer to the end so you can see when the ship gets really powered up though it has to be said that most of the bullets belong to the player ship!

Thats about the best the Amiga had to offer, maybe that's why I got left behind :)

@ Shockwave
Don't get me wrong, I play all kinds of shooters. Bullet Hell games are only about 25% of what I play really.

I haven't played the first one. I might have to check out more about it. I assume it is called Battle Squadren? Looks quite promising. The Amiga had quite a few it looks like.

EDIT:
Looked like it was well made according to a short blurb:
http://shmups.classicgaming.gamespy.com/xenocidefiles/amiga.html

I have played Xenon 2 on the Megadrive. I liked the euro style graphics of Xenon 2 for a change of pace. I remember there was something about the play that put me off but I can't remember what. It has been a long time.  ;) I might have to give it another try because I remember that Bitmap Brothers did the graphics.

In all honesty there aren't too many European shmups that I like. Sounds like an ignorant claim, but from their canon they do tend to use inertia, have lengthy health bars and huge hotboxes and have tiny bullets that sometimes unavoidable shot patterns. I'll try anything once however and I am open to new games from all regions.

:)

The game is called Battle Squadron, Hybris 2.

Hybris was the forerunner to it and that was a fabulous game.

It was the first shoot 'em up that I played on the amiga and thought that I wouldn't resent paying to play it in the arcade :)

Bitmap brothers graphics all had that nice style. The artist who worked with them was called Dan Malone and he always used that nice style of graphics in all his games, speedball, speedball 2, the chaos engine, magic pockets etc.. He was someone who's sprites I really liked.

The player ship in Xenon is one of the nicest low colour sprites I have seen in my life... I'd even go as far as saying it's on a par or better (in terms of quality) than some of the stylised sprites in metal slug, though the graphical styles of those two games are very different.

I'll have to take a crack at some Amiga titles soon! I'll get back to you in a bit, doing a lot of deadline homework today for college.

Just to continue the main topic of this thread, everyone should take a look at Warning Forever, evolving bosses with sprawling jointed limbs. Great freeware game. Seriously tbe bosses are epic around level 15 of their evolution. Their names are really funny too. They get to be like 6 words long. The learning curve is perfect for the casual player and also will challange the serious player. The great thing is the feeling of blowing off huge chunks of the boss. You see all of the limbs can be blown off. I assume the limbs are programmed into a sort of tree which gets pruned when you destroy limbs. Each time you blow up a piece all of the attached parts blow off to leading to chain reactions. If you do try the game you will want to go to the Option screen and take a look at the controlls.

The pic is just so cool. It was spinning while firing lasers and trying to ram me about 12 seconds after this.

That looks totally cool :)

Great that there are freeware developers around who take such pride in thier games. The evolving bosses is a fantastic idea too.

That's the one. Double dose of karma for you!

Pushing the discussion away from shooters for a second, anybody here played shadow of the colossus? Fantastic game in every respect (I love it enough I've completed it around 6 times and keep coming back for more!) and was well known for its unusual premise. A central hub area about 4-5 square miles in size, completely open from the start of the game and devoid of eneimes, save for the 16 boss monsters.

Did I mention that the bosses can be as tall as 300ft, baring in mind you are a 6ft adventurer armed with a sword and bow? Let me tell you, that game knew how to do bosses!

Well, I remember these type of games from my amiga time.
My first contact was Goldrunner. Cool music and great gfx for its time.
Later I tried games like X-Out, R-Type, Blood Money, Katakis etc. which really made me insane.
Those bosses where pure evil and I realized that the coders must be straight outta hell  ;D
