The Sword of Light Intro
« on: December 29, 2008 »
Here is a little intro to the game I am working on: The Sword of Light. SOL is the sequel to Deep Deadly Dungeons with many changes and lots of new additions to the game.

http://www.file-pasta.com/file/sol_intro.zip

This is fairly simple, functional rather than flash, as it is designed to give a bit of backstory to the game.

Nice tune and fire effect.

However, I think it would really improve your intro,
if you let the text appear in some smooth way. At
least maybe letting it fade in word by word or letter
by letter.

In that way - ppl are motivated to read the fading
in letters/words and are not swamped by a flood of
text.

Thanks guys. Good idea benny. I am using drawstring so it is difficult to fade in, but maybe simulating writing the text would work better.

Thanks.

In which language are you using the drawstring command ?

I think when you pass the
Code: [Select]
drawstring command the a Solidbrush object
with this e.g. in the constructor
Code: [Select]
Color.FromArgb(128, 255, 255, 255) you
can easily draw semitransparent stuff.

Well, at least I hope so  ::)

Oh, I should have explained. I am using FreeBasic. According to the docs, you can use an alpha value for the draw string text, but I haven't been able to get that working just yet. I need to investigate this a bit more.

just came up with 2 ideas, a folded scroll, then it unfolds revealing the desired text, then folds again, then unfolds with the next text and so on.

or an old book with turning pages to display the text.

don't know if any of this is possible to do in freebasic :)

bikerboy,

That is a nice idea on the scroll text. I'm afraid it is a bit beyond my graphic skills at this point though.

I was able to get the text to fade in using a custom drawing routine for FreeBasic's draw string. The link above has been updated with the new version.

i think it's better now, except one small detail.

the letters disappear  quickly 2-3 secs more would be ok :)

wish i could help but i'm learning freebasic, so i have no idea how this can be accomplished  ::)

Thanks for the input. I am using a timing routine so it is a simple matter to increase the delay. Here is the timing code so you can see how it works.

Code: [Select]
t = Timer
ts = Timer
tc = Timer
Do
ch = InKey
If Timer > (t + .1) Then
currcoolmap = GetRandom(0, numcoolmaps)
t = Timer
end If
             'This is the scene timing code. 20 here = 20 secs.
If (Timer > (ts + 20)) Or (ch = Chr(32)) Then
scene += 1
ts = Timer
av = 0
EndIf
If Timer > (tc + .03) Then
av += 2
If av > 255 Then av = 255
tc = Timer
EndIf
DoFire av
Sleep 1
loop until (ch = Chr(27)) Or (scene = 6)

This probably isn't the best way to do it though as you have pointed out.

Pretty atmospheric Rick, I really like the music, sets the mood.

It almost has the same feel as early bullfrog games intro on the Amiga, Just add some pictures of castles and knights on horseback and you're there. :)

I decided to make a new Clark Productions intro for SOL. It is very simple, trivial stuff for you gurus, but I like the way it turned out. I got the idea from playing with Paint.Net (which is a nice graphic program by the way if you can run it.)

Ja. Good idea to add an intro. Like it a lot -
maybe let it fade in/out - but good work !!
