Code challenges
« on: July 02, 2006 »
The last one was a great success, there was talk of doing a collaberation demo of some sort in the community projects thread, we could get the ball rolling on this soon but I am thinking of something else for the next challenge which could run alongside, this one will have more complicated rules and be more competitive, I don't think it's ever been done on a forum before, I'll have a think about it and get all the details sorted and then post it.

I'm still thinking through a few of the details but I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to make a 2 round compo.

I was thinking at first to have a limit on the final exe size but that's a little bit unfair on some of the folks that use different languages, so it will be a multi-language thing again.

I agree that size restrictions will be a difficult thing to do with multi language comps, FB makes far smaller exe's than Blitz for example. It would also be difficult to set a source code file size limit, you can get alot done in a 1k text file in blitz but in C/C++ or ASM I suspect not as much would be possible and how would you handle includes  ???

I dont know what direction your looking to go but I remember the C64 restriction style intro comp and the four elements comp we did on Clyde's board had a pretty good response. Perhaps setting some sort of theme or effect(s) based challenge and see who makes the best use of the theme or presents the effect(s) in the most interesting way ?

The last challenge had a good response and it would be nice to build on that success  O0

You know what, I am torn between 2 ideas;

1: An ASCII intro.
2: A demo that contains elements like Tindragon has suggested.

This competition will be in two parts, I will decide what to do about this by tomorrow evening (I promise!) and send an email to the complete membership to announce it :)

I'm thinking that It'll probably be cool for us to go down the Ascii route because any language can be used to create an ascii demo and that it will be different to anything we've ever done before.
