C64:

Just about everything there was to be had from code listings from the following and there are ones that I cant remember the name of right now.

C64 User Manual,
Commodore 64 Reference Guide,
Ideas 64 book
Step By Step Programming series
Your Commodore
Comodore Disk User
6510 Assembler routines using the raster interrupt; colour splits, sprite multiplexors, and a few others.

PC Lingos:

Div Games Studio - a game called Silly Cows ( personal entertainment ) and a Racing game called Speed Freaks ( released ). Not sure if Div Arena is still up, there was talk of a new version for Windows, as the original is Dos Based.

Blitz Basic 2D / Blitz 3D - Loads of stuff!! Majority can be found in the Showcase, look for releases by clyde or Gravity.

Blitz Plus / Blitz Max - Nothing yet.

FreeBASIC - Made about 4 gfx demos, and is my current weapon of choice with respect to my programming adventures.

Dark Basic: Think it's pretty cool, seen a fair amount of gfx demos, ones that stand out are by a crew called Dark Forge, dont think they are still about as googling for DarkForge is for something else now, unless they have a new site / group name?

Dark Basic Professional: Havent used it yet. Looks mighty cool. Is even simpler than B3D with many premade routines and libs.

Dev C++: Only tried out the Nehe tutorials found at Game Dev. Oh, and the obligatory "Hello World!" and "Vot is Yah name?"

M$ Visual Studio 2008 C++ Express Edition - not got off first base yet.

Cobra Demo Version - Made a Plasma effect.

Atari 1200
Followed various demos from the manual.

C64
Sequential drawing using for loops and the various characters (mostly non-alphanumeric) available.
Started writing a text based adventure, but it was too big to fit on the tape.

PS2 Yabasic
Several games including 4in1 V1, 4in1 V2, Yaboggle and Germ Warfare
A hand full of demos including Buzzy Bees and Rocks (a screen saver type thing).

ASP (it has a VBASIC style syntax)
A handful of websites. I stopped using it in favour of the PHP language though.

Are we only allowed to write about our BASIC exploits or can we do other languages too?

My earliest memories of basic are fond ones from my first computer, the Commodore Vic 20! :)

I used to love trying to type the listings in from the magazines (which never worked!), you could also buy games written in basic from the shops in book form! So you had to type them in before you could play them... These also hardly ever worked and were pretty bad but hey, it was a learning experience :)

My first BASIC programs were written when I was still at school on a BBC Micro, the routines were pretty short so I would print them out & take them home with me so I could enter them into my Sinclair 48k.

Some years after that I got an Amiga & got copies of AMOS off Amiga Format & CU Amiga Coverdisks.

Both magazines printed a lot of tutorials & I learnt a lot from them.

Did you have any network with the BBC's in your school Matthew?
I remember we had a room where there were about 20 BBC's all linked in a network, they must have been one of the ealiest LANs around that didn't use dumb terminals.

No, we only had 2 BBC computers in the entire school. (One on each floor of the building)  :D

My first experience with LAN computing was when I started Senior school & had access to a network of RM Nimbus PCs.

We had a room full of networked BBC model B's when i was at school, I coded a rather cool little routine that I could send over the network to any other computer on it and it would hack the graphics output and make all the words on screen turn into square blocks and drop down and pile up at the bottom. I got made into a systems admin after that and had to monitor lunchtime usage and do the friday system backup on the big harddrive :D

As for my BASIC and general coding experience,

Vic20 with commodore basic, made alsorts of stuff with it.

BBC Basic and Asm. Was mostly for school stuff.

Amiga, used everything from AMOS to BlitzBasic 2, made several little games and stuff with those, also tried my hand at C and Asm but never got far. Coded my A level computer project in AMOS, a paint package like Dpaint.

PC, Used Div Games Studio and made a clone of Fatal Fury. Did a few things in Darkbasic but found it slow. Switched to blitzbasic (2d) when i found it in a shop, converted a couple old amiga listings to it then went on to code afew games and demos in it, also got blitz3d and did a few things in that. More recently got blitzmax and have coded alsorts of little projects in it and am currently using it for opengl stuff.

Also on the PC I have coded some things in C tho nothing with graphics as such, have coded a few things in c++ including some opengl stuff and a limited attempt at DX back in the DX7 era. Also had a mess about with c# but havent really dug into it as I spend most of my time coding in bmax nowadays.

I have messed around abit with glsl shaders following some guides, havent coded my own entire complex vert or pixel shader yet but have edited others and had some success.

I have tried alot of basic's on PC and there are some very good ones, Purebasic seems pretty good tho it tends to be used more for apps. Ibasic/ebasic do there thing well enough but arent as good as purebasic, blitz or even dbpro imho. Freebasic is probably the best freeware one I have used and stands up well againt several paid basic's.

Myself I am happy with blitzmax, it's a very capable language which can be used much like the older blitzbasic's but if you dig in and start to use the OOP side of it you realize just how good a language it is. Plus it's very extendable with various modules and if you know what your doing you can use C and C++ code should you feel the need. Also all the default modules that come with the language have full source code so you can even edit and extend them if you wish to, there also a great source for learning more about the language itself.
