Why should you join up and post?

Who Are We?

This site came to life in 2003, it was started by two people who loved programming oldschool demo effects and originally it was an internal message board for projects of the group: Dark Bit Factory.

It was somewhere that we discussed ideas for demos and routines between a few friends.

After a while we noticed that quite a lot of people had started to join our internal message board and some of them were asking for tips and also sharing their own knowledge about demo programming.

Because it was a small community it was very friendly. Eventually the group "Dark Bit Factory" died, but the community lived on.. Because people had started to identify with DBF, the name remained as the title for the messageboard and eventually it was adopted by the whole site.

Gradually, as the site became more popular, eventually we migrated to proper hosting, we expanded the range of languages we covered to include as many as we could think of.

A portal was added (opensource at first and later a custom made one) to allow us to show off some of the great things we have made in our community.

Amongst other things, you can expect to find:

  • Being friendly. New people can safely join here and post without being attacked.
  • Community spirit. We are all friends here, there is no trolling, trolls are soon banned.
  • Challenges. There are regular code challenges which anyone can participate in sometimes to win prizes.
  • Active members posting about the things that they are working on and their ideas.
  • A readiness to accept new people into the community, there is no trial by fire here.
  • Knowledge.. We have some extremely experienced people here who are ready to help you learn.
  • A genuine love for the demo scene.

To survive, this community needs:

  • Active moderators who create new topics and posts and maintain the communities integrity.
  • New people who post as many questions as possible.
  • Progress updates from people who posted questions.
  • User participation (in challenges).
  • Feedback on what we're doing right and what we can improve on.
  • A link on your web page if you have one.
