Spyware / AdWare / Malware Protection.
« on: July 29, 2009 »
Hi,

I wonder if any of you can help me with this, I have AVG 8.5 as my antivirus protection.
But when it does a scheduled system scan, it tells me theres spyware on my pc in my cookies, but doesnt not remove them.

The other week I had a Trojan from some Malware that had managed to get on my PC, so getting to the point in this topic, do any of you have any recommendations on extra protection for Spyware, Adware, Malware, Back Door Trojans, Hijackers? Or is it just the case that AVG didnt spot it in time, and just I was unlucky this time around? As I havent had a major virus / trojan for at least 3 years.

I found this link from gooogle: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial101.html
And mentions a product called spyware blaster: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html , I dont know much on these. I dont want to get any more intrusions ( I regularly check for AVG Updates at least twice a day )

Preferably I'd like something that deals with most of these types of virus; and also isnt going to affect my PCs perfromance that much.

I really do like AVG 8.5.

What do you dudes recommend?

Cheers and thanks for your time,
Clyde

A firewall tuned to high security frequency. Kaspersky for AV. No-Script and Adblock+ for Firefox. Don't download porn you didn't pay for/don't download torrents you don't trust/etc. Keep windows updated.

Spybot isnt bad... but you should try first following program "Malware Antispyware" (even free version is doing a great work) - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Just check your config and remove all founds... restart your system and try Spybot Search n Destroy...

- Asus P5Q, Intel Q8200, 6 GB DDR2, Radeon 4870, Windows 8.1 x64

I am running AVG, always keep it upto date, so far its never let me down tho it does on the odd file tell me its got a trojan when I am sure there isnt, but I would rather the odd false positive than bad files slip thru :)

As for addware and cookie trackers, AVG seems to deal with most of them for me, again not had any problems yet. I do run a software firewall that warns me not only of network stuff but will also warn if something tries to poll IO such as keyboard/mouse, tho it's alittle but of overkill in some respects I like it :)

Currently using Avast free version and not had any problems that I am aware of. For spyware removal you could try out superantispyware.com, yes I know it sounds like a stupid name, but it actually does work ok.

I use AVG 8.5, Spybot (not so often any more), Windows Firewall, Popup Blockers on my browser and NAT on my router.  I keep my OS fully patched.  I never have any trouble.

Apparently Spybot isn't state of the art any more.  I know spywareinfoforum.com recommend MBAM and Avast, which others here have suggested too.

As a side point, AVG sucks. It likes to randomly declare scene demos as threats and deletes them, as Jim pointed out oh so long ago. It still causes me pain.
I love semi-colons way too much ^^;

yes AVG does sometimes declare scene demos as threats, but 99% of the time i have had no trouble with it doing this, only on few do i get this and it isnt the only virus program to do so. Since must of us are probably using the free version of it as well I dont really see we can complain, i would rather have avg than the bloated crap norton sell  ;)

AVG may give some false positives but it's a great free resource.
It's certainly better than Mcaffee and Norton bullshit software that brands your computer and costs an arm and a leg.

I still rate kaspersky and spybot.

Yep, Jim but I dont think UPX was ever resolved. Alot of zips Im unable to get at the exe as avg reports it as a virus.

Just to double check, is Spybot: Search And Destroy the same software as Spybot?
Reason I ask, is that there exists AVG 2009 but it isnt by AVG Technologies.

Latest version of AVG is 8.5.  I believe AVG 2009 is fake/malware.

Spybot is Spybot S&D is Spybot Search & Destroy and it comes from

What about a poll, where ppl can vote in with which software (antivirus, anti malware/spyware) they makes the best experience?

For example Antivirus:

- NOD32
- AVG
- Norton Antivirus
- G-Data Antivirus
- Kaspersky
- Mc Affee
- Antivir (free)

- MBAM
- Search n Destroy
- ...
- hp EliteBook 8540p, 4 GB RAM, Windows 8.1 x64
- Asus P5Q, Intel Q8200, 6 GB DDR2, Radeon 4870, Windows 8.1 x64

Some of those products are provably teh gay, without any vote.  I think some of it is personal choice - how intrusive is your scanner, how chatty is it, does it stay out of the way or keep telling you how good it is.  I'm not sure there's a right and a wrong product here.

You can take macaffee and norton out of that list, wipe your bum on the docs and turn the CD's into coffee coasters before you even start voting in a poll :)

Norton - If you have the skill, distort the discs into a parabola (or hyperbola, I forget which) for use in solar energy collection.

Cheers for all feedback and input, nice idea but I dont think a poll is neccassary on this occassion. I only wanted to know from your experiences with forms of viruses, any recommendations on tools / programs.

Ta,
Clyde.
