SUNDOWN BITS CHALLENGE

Welcome to the BITS Challenge!

[Create your very own broken demo!!!!]

If you've ever been on Pouet in the last few years you may have seen demos from a group called The Bits Club.
They are pretty bad... Professionaly bad even. Bits have released dozens of bad demos on many platforms, Pc, Gameboy, Amiga, ST, C64, not many playforms have escaped them.

Here are some examples of their work;

Bits are the perfect scene trolls, they are headed by Solo who notably ignores any criticism and advice levelled at him, posts nonsense in the oneliner but never actually breaks any rules.

Because of the variety of platforms that these "demos" are released on, it is widely suspected that Bits are a fake group comprising of several quite well known sceners, they submit demos to most scene parties but never attend any, and finally they annoyed the pouet gloperators so much that new BITS products do not even appear on Pouet any more, Solo is limited to posting in the one liner and the bbs now.

A list of past Bits demos;

http://www.pouet.net/groups.php?which=5718

Sundown embraces the lameness of BITS and the challenge here is to create your own tribute demo to them, it will be submitted to the bits competition at Sundown this year.

We will have a vote at the end and the best 8 will get submitted into the Bits competition at Sundown by me.

It's only a small challenge, so you have 2 weeks :)

There's no excuse not to enter this, it doesnt take any skill!

Here are the rules!

 • Exes only (Windows, Amiga, ST, C64, Vic 20, GBA  are fine)
 • Your Demo Must Contain Shit Coder Made "Music", Or Beeps or corrupt sound effects
 • Your Demo Must Contain Coder Made Gfx
 • Cut of date for entries is 29th August 2009 (23:39 GMT).
 • Two Entries Per Person Maximum.
 • Entries Will NOT Be displayed in our showcase! Even if they win!
 • The winner [S?] will be decided by a poll of forum users and the best 8 will go to sundown with me.
 • Late entries will not be counted for voting.
 • Please include a screenshot of your entry in your post.
 • Please only post finished work, if you update your entry the final one will be voted on.
 • You May NOT post a new version in your thread/update your entry after  the deadline for entries.
 • Please do not use cutting edge stuff like shaders, there is no need.
 • Your entry must have a random number at the end.. eg : BITS#4645.
 • Please prefix your entrioes with [BITS]
 • The rules are not open for discussion, if you see a glaring omission though, please PM me, posts questioning the rules will have to be deleted unfortunately.

There are no cash prizes, however...

 • 1st Place  - 15 Karma
 • 2nd Place - 10 Karma
 • 3rd Place  - 5 Karma
 • All entries get A Sig! and K+2

But if the point is to be bad, shouldnt you pick the worst 8 demos?
Or is the criteria most convincingly BITS-like demo?

Clearly, the criiterea is most convincing bits demo, being bad will come naturally if you are successful.

The "best" 8 will be voted by everyione here.

If BITS tries to inflate on all platforms, why not use the browser/flash platform.
You can do ugly stuff with flash/javascript  O0

Nevertheless, just want to mention it - I personally doubt that I would find
time to join this comp anyway - although it sounds like big fun!

They have not released anything on flash as far as I am aware so please stick to the platforms that are mentioned to ensure that they are eligible for Sundown.

If BITS have released on a platform then you can use that platform.

I really don't want to have to change the rules now, I have too much to do at the moment sorry.

Yup. True. Of course you are right. It was more wondering
why the BITS crew hasn't release something ugly which runs
in the browser.

Rules of this competition should stay of course as they are.

I am looking forward to see those ugly entries popping up!

benny! - if you want to send me a compiled .fla file, or the source, I'll see if I can compile it into an executable.

The only problem I'll have with this contest will be creating convincing retro music. Can anybody suggest a program I could use to create retro sounding music?

Until you posted your sound file, I was going to use that shitty Crazy Frog version of Axel F, which would have caused many people to envy the deaf.

Thanks for the offer, mate. If I really find the time to have a try
(which I doubt) I will come back to your nice offer. Thanks a lot.

I love the challenge ( certainly because I can do something at the level of BITS production )

Close to miss it, it is not displayed on the main news page.

And moreover, I can do shitty sound myself ( very good in this category ;) )

Thank you and let see

( Thank you for the information on BITS because I didn't follow too much the pouet story )
The demoscene will never die, never!

Mine is almost finished. I just need to put in the snakes, add the AI, finish the scroller text and import the music.

Now I just need to import the music. Mine is so crap it's unreal!

Shockwave - should I mention I got the music from you in the scroller, or should all contributions in the final build remain anonymous?
