Another reason to dislike microsoft.
« on: October 13, 2009 »
An Email I got today from our hosts basically showing the lack of support Microsoft offer it's (shit) products, how insecure they are and finally don't worry we don't use frontpage extensions for anything here.

Quote
Dear Nick,

We constantly review the software offered on our hosting packages to ensure our hosting platform remains secure.

When new software is released, we are often able to upgrade without any impact to the sites that you host. This ensures that we are able to patch any bug fixes identified by the software vendor.

Unfortunately, FrontPage Extensions have not been updated since June 2006. This was the date that Microsoft officially discontinued support for the software.

In the last 12 months, the number of sites that have been defaced (alternative content uploaded to a site by an unknown third party) on a global level has increased considerably. This concerns us as there are no updates that can be applied to combat this.

We are therefore proposing the removal of FrontPage Extensions from our shared, reseller and premium hosting servers in January 2010. We have posted on the community forum asking for comments from our customers.

If you are using FrontPage Extensions, we would ask that you register and post on the thread so that we can help further. There are alternative options which have been explained on the forum.

Any customers not using FrontPage Extensions will not be affected by the removal of the software.

Yours sincerely,
XILO

Wow, I got that same email.

I once had a YaBB forum on my Xilo account - out of the blue they decided, due to security issues - YaBB forums were no longer allowed, and I was issued with a "breach of terms of service" warning without any explanation.

It looks like their customer service tactics are improving.

Tetra has Jmbarrie's website hosted there, he reccommended Xilo, and tbh they seem to take security seriously. this is the second thing they pulled the plug on since we have been there to be honest, the first one was fantastico, the second is Front page extensions.

I hae to admit that I really like Xilo, the host is really fast and my support tickets are usually answered within minutes, Tetra told me that technically they even went as far as helping him to debug his pearl scripts. I'd reccommend them to anyone, they are a real breath of fresh air compared to hostcrappa.

Uptime has been 100% since we've been there as far as I know.

Do you have Barcode Battler hosted there?

I've had Barcode Battler up on Xilo for a few years - out of that there was a 3 day period when my site was down because of a hardware problem on the shared server which corrupted much of the data on it.

Thankfully they had a decent back-up system, and it came back up fine.

I've no idea what Fantastico and FrontPage Extensions do, as I usually code HTML/PHP/JS/SQL manually, so I doubt my site will be affected by these changes.

Fantastico is an automated thing that installs stuff to your account (forums and blogs etc), Frontpage extensions do stuff like handling forms etc. No great loss really.

Any decent web coder can do those things manually, and there are many templates out there for beginners, so that's OK.
