Intro
« on: May 08, 2010 »
Hi,
After a long break from demo coding (my last demo was a 256 byte), I had a play with C++ and SDL and this is what I came up with. Seems a bit amateurish compared to some of the stuff in this forum, but I had fun making it :) It's the kind of thing I always wanted to make back in the DOS days when I had no skill. I first saw this lissajous effect in Cronologia  by cascada.
I hope it's OK to include the music with this, it was a freely available remix of nemesis the warlock on http://www.remix64.com. And I hope it's OK to use your font shockwave.
If not then I guess this post better get deleted...

Enjoy...

Nice little intro - a tough little game too. (Windows 7 x64 here)

I think you other guys are missing Visual C++ 2010 C runtime DLLs.  You can get them here:

32bit

64bit

Thanks guys.
Yeh it's my first complete intro, although I have played around with individual effects using SDL.

AH sorry about the missing runtime dlls. I'm on XP 32-bit and I have only tried it on XP and Vista machines.

After downloading as bunch of dll's I get the following error: "can't find entry point of procedure _invalid_parameter_noinfo_noreturn in dll file MSVCR100.dll"  ???
I also downloaded the files from jim's link, I'm on XP.

[EDIT] Scratch that! it works after removing my manually downloaded dlls!

Nice swirly dude, and neat little game! :)

I can't help I'm afraid as I don't have another machine to try it on.
Maybe I shouldn't have built it with VS2010

->madeyes
If you link with static libraries instead of dlls you don't get this problem.

->Dr.Death
If you go to the microsoft links I posted it has an installer which will put the dlls in your windows folder somewhere.  Don't download them one-by-one from random places on the web, there are loads of non-release version ones hanging around which don't appear to work and it's a great way of picking up a virus.

I usually do not try stuff that require me to download additional libraries, especially when it is something for which I have no other use. I think it would be a good idea to do as Jim has suggested, at least then you might get more people to watch your production. Just something to think about. This is ment as a positive comment. It sounds like you did an excellent job with the intro and it would be great, if it was possible to view it without having to install something else first.

->zawran - some piece of software you install sometime in the near future will install those dlls anyway - as it already has done for me, clyde, hotshot and madeyes (even though it's probably vs2010 that did it).  Anyway, if you're going to get the dlls at all, get them from Microsoft. :)

zawran: yes I agree I wouldn't normally bother to download something I need to get dlls for.

I attach the demo recompiled with static libraries. Thanks for the tip Jim.
This is the first time I've played about with these visual studio settings so I can't guarantee it will work (I haven't got a way of testing it sorry).

I just downloaded and took at look at it. I like the bob rutine, it brings back memories :)  Warlock the Nemesis, the original C64 tune might just be my favorite game tune of all times, so using that remix made me find the original and give it another listen, its been a while since last :)  All in all a good effort for your first intro, so you can easily pad yourself on the back for this one. :)
