Cloud Coding
« on: June 29, 2011 »
I had this idea some years ago, when I saw that google ported so many office apps (e.g. Excel, Word etc) to the browser platform? I am speaking of Cloud Coding, meaning your complete IDE runs in the browser and you save all your files in the cloud?

Reading through this artcile there seems to be some good progress in this field.

What do you think about this?

Personally, if you take a fast internet connection for granted, the whole cloud thing becomes really interesting. If I just imagine I would not have to care about deployment stuff etc.

No doubt in my mind that Cloud systems are the future of business..

Your applications exist on the servers of the companies that wrote them - a perfect way of virtually eliminating piracy, creating even bigger monopolies and charging even more money for your programs because your customers will have no choice!

The concern with Cloud right now is if you start using one vendor and they go away or you fall out with them, what happens to your data then?  Can you get it out?  Or could it get lost forever?  Also, the data is still on a computer somewhere.  Is it being backed up properly?  How do you know until it goes wrong (ezboard, distribute IT?).  And there's that poor bloke for whom Flikr 'lost' 10 years of his photos.  Who is mining/spying on your data too? (google, dropbox).

Too many questions for me.

Jim

Definately some interesting points there, Jim. I will keep an eye on this movement.

I prefer to have my own copies of my own files.

With the number of high-profile hacks in recent months, I'm not convinced that the security is high enough, even if I don't plan to store confidential information in the cloud.

If my PC is switched off and disconnected from the internet, nobody can break into my computer while I'm not working on my files.

i think the game plan for the next windows is that the majority of stuff will all be accessed in Cyber Space.

If they leave in the option to save files / documents / photos / etc locally, I'll keep an open mind with regards upgrading.

You guys expressed 100% what my feelings are about "cloud-everything".

Here are my thoughts. I took the time to diagram it out of passion.

That summerises it nicely. I will present this to anyone who argues for the cloud without considering the possible negative aspects of it. K+

Microsoft Cloud outage

I wonder how many people that affected, and what was the associated cost in lost productivity?

I couldn't get into my Hotmail inbox - maybe that was why. Good thing I have a Gmail account too.
