Hello and apologies
« on: November 10, 2013 »
Hi all,

It's been a long long time since I posted here and I do feel a little bad for not having been here but things change I suppose.  I think that my focus started changing when programming became my job and then when my son was born and I feel less and less inclined to do any graphics stuff when I spend my days writing pricing matrices and other exciting things that pay the bills.

It's a far cry from driving a van for a living and this has come a long way from the days of Yabasic and even further from the days when I was active on the Amiga, quite a scary prospect, in just 9 years my son will be a teenager and I'll be 50 years old and 9 years goes by so very fast.

I owe this forum and a lot of you a great debt which I can never repay, thanks to your wisdom and support I made the jump from driving a van into a dry office and it came at the right time in my life.

So I'm just popping in to say hello and to reassure you that the hosting is paid up for another year because as long as some people are getting some enjoyment or worthwhile help from here then it's worth me keeping it online even if I only look through the window as I'm passing nowadays.

Take care and if I don't pop back before then I hope you are all well and that you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.

Take care,

Shock.

No need to apologies but That is understandable on what people go through life and yes, the time doesn't wait for no one which is true fact.

Your Programming Job? You enjoy what you always want to do and that is your passions :)

Hey Shocky,

cool to read some news from you and glad to hear that you are fine.

The foucs of my life changed, too. I guess it's just a matter of time.

Even though I am also quite inactive - I love the people here and what DBF stands for.

Wish you and your family are great christmas, too.

Take care, mate!

Best,
benny!

Hi Shockwave,

I understand what you mean - time changes people and the demands they're put under. Keep doing what's important and everything will be right.

i am a little sad after that read  :(,

happy that all is well in your life nick but sad at the realization that this place has slowed down so much and probably will never be the same again. i miss all the hustle and bustle of the high times and all the exciting stuff folks were doing.

i owe a lot too you guys and this place, so many fond memories attached here its sad too see tbh.

do you guys think simple demo style coding on limited languages will ever become popular again? well at least too the point that whole community's come together like we did here.

Sad to hear, but I can empathise fully. You'll get back to doing 'something'.  So you're about 4 years old than me?

my focus started changing when programming became my job and then when my son was born and I feel less and less inclined to do any graphics stuff

Same here, I also had an added push in that I had a harddisk failure which really pulled the rug from under me in 1999! Only now my lifestyle has changed do I have an environment in which to code - albeit still mostly only during the winter months, and when (like in the last month or so) other priorities get in the way.

In those 10+ years "out" of coding at home, What I did over the years, and still do as a mental game is that if an idea pops up to distract me is to plan it out on paper (maybe a small notebook?) to get it out of the way. When I've then coded what I'm working on I can then use it to define a direction to focus the limited time I do have in a particular direction.

By breaking it down like this it makes me feel like i'm building blocks towards something much bigger.

No sprogs here yet though..

I think real life gets in the way for most of us, the focus in life changes all the time.

I know my circumstances change all the time, with ongoing struggles, changing occupations, learning new things/hobbies... coding is in there somewhere still though... it's just stagnant at the moment.

I'm still around the 'DBF' place though, and it would be a shame if this forum was no longer... I'm sure the rest agree with me there! I know I appreciate all the help you guys have given me in learning to code demos... as I knew absolutely nothing when I first came here.

Hey Shock!

So that's what happen when you get old?
That's very bad!

Luckily, I'm still a teenager, I'm only 15 years older!  :carrot:

Just remember, the kids here also needs your attention  ;)

hey hey :)
Yes, I know what it's like. You need a reason or purpose for coding something as "meaningless" as demos. Try making a game (that's a real test!) - it will reinvigorate you - don't set any target, just make it a work of art. Anything else (say, this xmas compo) is something fun and only give some spare time you can afford.

If I said I was going to give the xmas compo a go this year, would you have a go as well?

:)

It has been ages since I last checked in here. I have been busy with just about anything else than demo coding. I am trying to find time to work on a game though, so I do get a little bit of coding done every now and then. But in life things chance and noone really keep doing the same thing over and over. But it is nice to know you are doing great.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you all.

Glad to hear that things are going well Shockwave! as we all know focus in life changes continuosly, thats a good thing btw! Your son will become a teenager in 9 years from now? that's plenty of time! ...but you're not the only one who's putting much effort in RealLife(TM) business, I'll become dad in a few months (around april next year) so I think I'll spend less and less time online since then too.
Hope to hear from you from time to time (even if you're looking by the window only), all your efforts in keeping this place up and running are invaluable, as the resources everyone could dig in here!.

If you cant pop up for xmas please take care of your Real growing business, I wish you all the best and a sincere Merry Xmas and Happy new Year!

Best whishes to you all guys! =)

Nice to hear from you Nick, I gave up programming a long time ago mainly because I was never very good at it.
Then by chance one day I came across this forum and after reading what users had to say and the way peeps got help
I decided to start again and have been since I joined the forum, I am 52 years young, Dyslexic and find it hard to grasp the simplest of things.
The D.B.F is my friend, My answers and my source of normality.

All the best to you and your family mate and may you all have a good Christmas.
