Cave
« on: September 30, 2006 »
Here is my first entry for the POVRay size coding competition 2006. The code is 176 bytes and its my first POVRay image. The maximum file szie allowed is 256 bytes but I dont think I could add anything here.

I decided to go very artistic with the cave mouth placed in an interesting place and bizarre orange colours and some excessive noise in the wall. The overall effect could be love or hate. Wish me luck!

Oh as I put this in the code section: here is the code...does anyone use POVRay?

Code: [Select]
#macro A(f)finish{reflection{,f}} #end
union{plane{z,20}normal{wrinkles}A(2)}
union{sphere{z*22-3,5}A(1)}
union{plane{y,-3}normal{agate.3}A(1)}
sky_sphere{pigment{agate scale 3}}

Yep, raytracing.

POVRay is persistence of vision raytracer. Its the defacto standard raytracer for people with no money to spend on rednering packages. Its only 10Meg so perhaps you can download from:

http://www.povray.org/

Its easy to get going because there are example files. Usually these are somewhat larger than 256b :-)

Here is my second enrty (you can enter 4 times). I call it x-raytrace. Its a completely different style (thats a rule too) but still quite cool for 195 bytes. Its meant to be a x-ray of an impossible bone structure

Code: [Select]
#macro A(f)cylinder{<9*sin(f),6*cos(f*f),6>,<cos(f),sin(f),9>,1,2} #end
union{
blob {A(4)A(5)A(8)A(9)A(0)A(1)A(2)}
pigment{wood}
finish {reflection{,6}}
}
sky_sphere{pigment{wrinkles}}

The cave is really nice, great job on that one. The second one just doesn't speak to me, so not really sure what to think about that one.

Once again, I find myself following in your footsteps Taj. :) After seeing these images, I d/l'ed Povray and took a look at it. Really amazing. The scene description language doesn't seem too hard to understand either. I am going through the tutorial right now. Thanks for mentioning this. Maybe I'll have some chladni pictures to show at some point.

Yeah, I'm a freak. :)

rdc, there is still time to enter the compo with a chladni pic !! I'm really pleased you got the buzz too. If only POVray was standard on win32 systems - 4ks would be so much more interesting!

Shockwave, I guess a POVray entry isnt allowed in the maths image compo is it?

That's a good qustion Taj...

Actually the picture is generated using a formula in Povray so while it wouldn't be the sort of thing I'd have expected in the comp I don't suppose that it matters much what it is written in, I dunno.. I can't see the comp being full of povray stuff so carry on, variety is the spice of life.

You know what, I thought about it and its not a good idea: POVray has built in fractals in 3d and stuff, its too much advantage. No, lets not do that.

Sooo...

This competition is closed and I've seen the entries and they are very very very good. I'll be lucky (very) to be in top 3 I think. Worse one of the images is very very close to "cave" above so I think someone has got my code and reworked it and entered it. Its a great shame because that means my entry doesnt stand out in any way. When the entries are "open to the public" I'll post a link but I think posting my code here was unwise so early in the competition. Next time Ill be more careful, there are too many people happy to rip code I suppose. :-(

Really shame...  :(      your entry is really good

And that's why I will only post source code in form of attached file, this will make more difficult for those rippers   >:(
