Monochrome Invaders
« on: October 05, 2006 »
Here's a piece of code I did a long while ago for a 100 lines compo. It's a 2D vertically scrolling shooter. It's got sound and music.

Controls:
Arrows, move ship.
Space, fire.

Objective:
DESTROY THEM ALL!!!

How to win:
Get a highscore. You lose when you get hit by one, or when one gets past you. They also move faster for every one you kill.

Files attached :)

Oh, wait. I know what the problem is, just a second. (There's a highscore file I forgot to include )

So sorry, finally fixed.

No problems dude -thanks for posting it. My god thats a hard game! It would be great on a mobile phone. I made 975 before my hand fell off. I would suggest to thin down the star field a bit (less points). OK going for another game now.

The starfield is just an image with the game in the main folder. "Night.png" You can edit that, or replace it. You just have to keep the dimensions at 200x400 and the extension as .png

(And my best score so far was about 2900)

Also, for those interested, code is attached to this post.

It's a really difficult game. I couldn't work out why I was dying at first! Good fun though. I'm stopping before I get the same problem as Taj!

Okay, for those of you who were having problems[Loud keyboard noises], I made 2 mods (the code is now 110 lines)

Now, near the top of the code, there's a "totalhealth" variable that controls the health of enemies.
And! If you press M on the opening screen, it enables mouse control =)

Really nice game. Well done. I really like the monochrome retro design.

On the one hand I thought it is too hard, too - but on the other hand I think
the difficult level is well chosen. This is a casual game - and you the duration of
one life shouldnt be too long.

So. Really good. And btw. An online highscore system would be a nice feature  ;)

Really excellent (even if i can't beat 500 pts).  Maybe such production should be added in a new section on II: games?  any feedback about that idea?

tricky druid. Intro inferno is a lot about size (intros by definition are size limited). So for me at least the size of the game would matter. So adding games would mean 1k game, 4k game,64k game etc...like a parallel category.

I like scene-games a lot. Also size-limited games. So, why not add an extra section for it.

I think the idea of adding a game section to II is a good one, though, as taj pointed out, you'd have to figure out how to do it well..

And thanks everyone, I'm glad you all liked it  :)

Games would definately be a good thing on II, make them short ones and it will be perfect.

I'm getting an invalid stream handle. I assume this is my fault?

Never mind, the file didn't extract right. Pretty cool game, hard though.
