Here we go!
« on: October 29, 2006 »
Well, I guess that it was time I bit the bullet.. I am going to learn C++ and Fasm. I just invested £50 in books today (I know that there are plenty of great online tuts) spending the cash will make sure that I learn it because I hate to waste money.

I'll be posting my "hello worlds" in here for everyone to laugh at.

That will help with the C++ programming!  Please post your progress, I know this is something you've been trying to break in to for years.

Which compiler are you planning to use?  I strongly recommend you go for Visual Studio Express 2005 http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/.  That way you'll be able to write all the possible flavours of Windows code.  It'll be a massive amount of downloading as you'll need the Platform SDK too, but it's probably worth it.  devc++ while it's free and small isn't what the rest of the world are using.

I'll take your word for that Jim and I'll use that.

You're right, I've wanted to do this for a long time, this is going to be the time that I do it!
Starting to look through the book last night it is obvious to me that I need to change the way I go about some of the things I do.. Up until now I have been an exclusively structured programmer.. OOP looks a completely different thing.

The two books I bought are;

Sams Teach yourself C++ in 21 days
Opengl distilled by Paul Martz.

The teach yourself one is going to be essential for me, I need to "unlearn" a lot of my bad habits before I do graphics stuff.

I am determined to make a good job of this so don't worry, I will definately be keeping the forum full of new C++ stuff I learn, even if it's just opening windows and stuff for the first few weeks :)

If I can help, I'll be glad to after all the help you've given on the forum. I've programmed C for nearly 15 years: but no real C++ so do not ask me about templates and the standard C++ lib.

Thank you Taj :) I'll almost certainly be asking you more than a few questions regarding tinycoding once I get off the starting blocks!

I've got a couple of those sams books myself.  I found them really good.

Is there any particular reason you want to learn c?  Not that i think it's a bad idea :)

@Shockwave:

Good luck. I didn't use C for a long time now and had just some basic knowledge of C++ but I
am of course willing to help you if I can.

Speaking of general OO I might help you because I am rather used to JAVA. Java is true OO
that's why OO with C++ might be a bit more difficult to understand. However once you are used
to thinking in objects it is really easy and makes larger projects better organisable (imho).
