Chladni Landscape
« on: December 12, 2006 »
I have been playing around with OGL. I modified the NeHe terrain tut to display a chladni texture as a heightmap. Up, down keys move camera, space generates a new terrain, esc quits.

Prog attached.

personally i dont think chladni volumes are fitting as landscapes, but a thumb up for the effort indeed :)

Yeah, it dosen't really grab you. I actually think my 3D points version was more interesting. Bu it was a learning excersie more than anything. If I can figure out how to texture it, it will be interesting to see how the colors map out.

I added palette generation to this to color the landscape. You can also press space to generate a new landscape. I also neglected to init the random number generator in the last version, so I fixed that in this one. A bit more interesting.

Rdc,

Much better with the random put in I think. Shows some potential.
You could try creating chladnis at increasing resolution but decreasing height (double res, half height) and adding them. That would give a more landscape like look I think. I'm not sure how that corresponds to your equation parameters but I guess you can work that out by now :-)

Then try alternating adding and subtracting which would be better again at a guess.

Thanks man. I think that is a good idea, worth a try. Right now, it is just buildng a standard chladni. I should try using the fractal type, it may give more variation, or end up a mess. :)

This has turned out to be a good learning excersize. I am getting a handle on the OGL basics at least.

That looks pretty good Rick. I Agree that it needs some randomness though and maybe a more land like palette and it would be perfect.

Thanks Shockman. One thing I discovered is that odd m and n values look better, since it turns out a bit more organic and less symetrical. I also want to try setting up the color based on the heightmap; maybe white for snow peaks and green for valleys. I am still trying to understand the color blending though. Ultimately I'd like to apply a texture to it, but since it is generated randomly, I am not quite sure how to go about it.

Okay, here we have snow covered mountains and lush green valleys. Sort of. :) Updated link in first post.

That looks better, to me it looks like stones or boulders in a field if you disregard the tops being white.

To make them look more realistic I'd reccomend making the mountains more jagged, just do a pass over the heightmap and add or subtract some random amount per point.

Secondly, try to vary the colours up the peak more say go from green to brown to grey to white.

And you said you'd run out of ideas for chladni :)

which seems to be a text file??? I tried on two PCs. Am I going senile?

@taj:

Download-Link works like it is supposed to be. It sends me a zip. Strange ... have you try it via a proxy ?

It appears FileAnchor is having some problems. I have put it on my site and updated link above.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

You can add it to your post, that would be a lot easier Rick. My post in the general forum is aimed at trying to reduce the size of pictures posted in future, I don't wantto put anyone off posting their programs :)
