Sundown Party Report
« on: September 13, 2009 »
Sundown party report.

This year, the same as last year I traveled up to Sundown with Wayne, it's a decent trip from where I live, it's about 3 and a half hours drive. The waether over the weekend was glorious, the beach must have been great, although I was too drunk to go to the beach later on in the night.

On arrival the place was pretty busy. We got there on Saturday, it was impossible to arrive Friday because of family commitments, but by all accounts the atmosphere was excellent on Friday night, we set up in between Spiny of Torment and Andy and Dave from RCM, there was not a lot of room but it was ok, internet was slower than ever this year, as we have come to expect from Sundown (thats part of its charm). We'd also missed the bacon rolls this time, we arrived just a little bit too late for them.

I set about trying to code something to release at the party, I had started on something just before the forum crashed, since that time my efforts have been fully geared into repairing the site, I had my doubts that I would make something in time for the deadline, eventually I came up with a kind of grid thing, Andy from RCM was working on something and so was Littlewhite who later came to sit with us (a really nice guy and a pleasure to meet him! Thanks for greeting DBF in your demo too).

I guess that comparisons have to be drawn to last year and for some reason the comps were very delayed and there were some technological problems with stuff and only a handful of entries for each competition, down in number a lot from last year but there were some real gems in amongst them.

The main thing was the friendly spirit at the party, it is attended by a great bunch, Ruairi was as welcoming as ever and it was good to catch up with some of the people from last year.

Sleeping was an ordeal, there were freaks sleeping everywhere, on the stage, in the hall, in the foyer... Wayne and I had a rather uncomfortable night sleeping in the foyer, on waking up there was an inordinate amount of empty beer cans all over the place, it will take a long time to clean up the hall.

It doesn't sound like a brilliant appraisal, in truth it wasn't quite as much fun as last year but nevertheless it was a great little party and I shall be looking forward to the next one, I hope that Ruairi doesnt take too much criticism for the party because it's really great that someone in the UK is taking the bull by the horns and taking the financial risk and investing the time into organising the only real UK demo party around these days.

And btw, Waynet has some photos too ;)

Oh and btw I did try and submit the bits prods but I got the impression that Ruairi wasn't too keen on the idea, maybe after all the bad shit over at pouet.

No probs mate photos will be on here shortly they're are just going through quality control :)

I must say i agree entirely with everything that Nick wrote.I'm still buzzing from the weekend and not thru lack of pit spray. The whole atmosphere of the event was brilliant, whether you wanted mingle with fellow sceners or just chill out  it didn't really matter. An excellant weekend  it was good to catch up with some familliar faces like Drewpee,Phoenix Tlb and Rc55 and to meet up with some new people also.I definately recommend anybody thinking about going next year to start saving now. Thanks to every body who made it weekend to remember but most of all thanks to Shockwave for taking me there, your a legend mate. :kewl:

I'm missing out!

I'll have to get rid of my family ;)

It sounds like fun, but I fear I'd be a fish out of water.

Like the year before - looks like a real cool party and atmosphere.
Thanks for adding all those picture that give us who did not attend
to the party at least a bit of the feeling of the atmosphere!

Remember to book some time off for next year :)

It would be really cool if DBF members could reserve a few tables next time. We could have a proper piss up then.

I'll go, if I manage to master C or some other proper demo language by then, blitz really isn't appropriate for demo-scening.

Blitzmax is capable of anything you would be able to do in C or C++, well with the exception of 4k stuff, thats out of the question, but most of those are probably made in asm anyways. Yes out of the box Blitzmax does make some huge exe files, but with a bit of work and understanding how to utilize its modularity, you can get the size down to something compairable to C. And the speed is about the same, which would be expected since its compiled in the same manner as c is, using the gcc compiler.

But if you're thinking of Blitz3d and BlitzPlus, then yeah you're right, they are not useful for doing anything demo scene current, but fine for retro remake stuff. Whether or not something made in anything but c or asm would be accepted by the demo scene in general is another matter entirely, but thats mostly due to elitism and refusal to accept that something else might be just as useful as what they are using.

As far as the scene report, then it great to hear and see how the parties are these days. I'm considering attending one sometime in future. So any feedback on whats its like attending those is appreciated. I might attend The Gathering 2010 in the spring, its only an 11 hour drive from where I'm at, so I could make a road-trip out of it :)

Slinks, there are plenty of people who go to parties just for a good time. You don't need to code if you don't want to, you don't even need to bring a computer (I'd reccommend one though).

The point of the parties is that parties represent the demoscene and finally you have the chance to meet your friends and meet some great new people who would also become friends too.

Whilst getting very, very drunk.

this is all about scene spirit itself... party wars are (almost, I think/hope,) over by a decade or so...

sounds sweet!...

It would very cool to meet all of you guys someday (now I just need to made some plans on how to get rid of my girlfriend and getting some work days off).

you know Im dumb, i've just worked out what the T represents in Waynet.

It looks like a right old knees up as I suspected, and I notice the famous red book on one of the dudes tables.

Thanks for the photos chaps, what did we miss through quality control? Or is it a case of red eye.

I am going to make every effort to attend next year although I am camera shy and can't stand seeing myself in photos, and I hope there's a bar stocked up with Guiness! :) If not then I will have to buy shares.

Clyde, it's populated by all kinds of people, most of them wear black.

You'll see all kinds of people there, I think it goes hand in hand with being creative, there's nothing to worry about, it's just an all round good weekend with friends.

It would be great to see you there next year.

It would be great to see you there Clyde and you would really enjoy it.Having your picture taken is purely optional so don't worry about that.I'm hardly photogenic myself but its nice to have a permanent memory of a great weekend with fantastic people. :)
