Present Drop
« on: November 26, 2009 »
With all the uncertainty round at the moment, I'm hitting the Christmas coding rush early and making a festive scrolling shoot-em-up.

I've got some ideas, mainly the use of Rudolph's nose as a laser which takes 5 seconds to recharge, and Christmas pudding "bombs" which are dropped on enemies, but I'm not sure what to use as a projectile for a machine gun.

I'll have a playable demo up tomorrow night, hopefully with a full version ready for Christmas - and it will be SMF Arcade compatible :)

What about something like snow flakes? Christmas tree decorations?

Spot on! I'll call it a "Bauble Gun". A light-bulb popping sound effect might work for impacts. I'll work on this tomorrow. k+

I could have the goblins hurling yellow snowballs from their flying mince pie craft. Great ideas all round.

Here is a slightly playable version: Present Drop Demo

At the moment, only the WASD/Arrow controls work, and you cannot drop presents or attack, neither can you die. One step at a time.

Really nice so far! Looking forward to see the finished product! Rudolph looks a little like a crossbreed between a deer and a spider, but I like it! :D

The spider/deer cross is the result of my limited drawing skills, but I'll have another go if I get time.

The stars will represent the "Magic" rating - if a present misses, you lose a star, and if you get a present down a chimney, you gain a star. The more stars you have, the faster the nose laser recharges.

I'll make the chimneys bigger.

Cool, I like the parallax clouds.

I know it all depends what sort of look you're going for in the game but would it be possible to loosen off the sled from rudolf a little so he appears to drag it around as he moves, and it maybe bobs around a little by itself when rudolf's not moving (other than the scrolling movement). Just a thought but very nice anyway.

I'm not sure if you've played "Santa & Rudolph Do Christmas!" (on the amiga http://hol.abime.net/3875) but that might help with some inspiration)

I'm downloading yours now to have a play :)

[Edit:] Ah very cool, and nothing to download!

Cute, a quick thing I noticed, when you move the sleigh forward the stardust appears to be static, this should probably scroll backwards at a constand rate instead of speeding up when he slows down and stopping when he speeds up, the gap between particles would increase with his speed to give the right effect :)

It'll get bigger when all the sound effects are added.

I see what you mean with the stars - if I seperate them from the main movie-clip, that should result in the effect you have described. A bit like the Doppler effect.

Update - the game now uses the Q and E keys to swap elves, but only 2 of them hold items and none of them can be dropped yet :(

Thanks everyone - I'm working on putting the bad guys in at the moment, but I'll have the space bar and the loosened reindeer sorted shortly after.

I'm not happy with the current chimneys - I might dispense of the roof completely and just have giant chimneys.

The next update for the Fractigami site may be delayed until Wednesday of next week :(
