[UDG] - Retro Rorschach
« on: February 23, 2013 »
Hello all, here's a fun little cellular automaton for the comp! The result of an interesting little bug I hit when working on the Game of Life. I (accidently) commented out one line of conditional checks, which changed the normal (boring :P) GoL behaviour to this. The symmetrical patterns reminded me of the Rorschach test. If you tend to see faces or figures in the patterns you're probably insane!  ;)
I generate the 16 random tiles/colors at the start of the program.

Really happy I managed to enter something once again! Enjoy!

Click and drag to draw and erase cells (symmetrical shapes give best results, but go wild)
SPACE to start and pause
C to set a random start configuration

Cool to have something interactive as well :)  I really like these patterns, they look like cartoon aliens so I must definitely be bonkers.

This is an excellent tool for coming up with semi-random logos as well as a cool demo, making it a multi-functional program.

I'm definitely seeing faces and symbols in this, though I already know my sanity isn't what it used to be. Mwhahahahaaa!

I really like the way this was created by you deleting a random line... makes me wonder how many programs can be improved by deleting random lines!  :)

Thanks all! I'm quite pleased with some of the quirky tamagotchi like monsters that appear sometimes. Mayan style! :)

Hitting upon such unexpected results makes me feel like one of the infinitely many monkey's of the infinite monkey theorem. Just bashing the keys in a random fashion until something good comes out. ;D

The line I removed was part of my optimisation code for the GoL. It works when small parts of the screen are active at once (like in the standard GoL patterns), but in this case, where nearly the entire screen is active at once, it probably does more harm then good...  :-\

Woah cool work Kirl! I have to admit I had to google what Rorschach was and had to read the Wikipedia article first. I even figured it was not about the town in Switzerland.  ;D So interactive fun and education all in one. Me likey!

Thanks padman! The Rorschach test clearly depict alien monsters, though my shrink insist they're just random inkblots!  ;)
Never knew there was a town in Switzerland called Rorschach.

Kirl, I really like how you approach the themes of the competitions here. It is always something I never have thought of and very creative.

Thumb up!

Thank you benny! It's a my only hope of competing with the programming wizardry on these forums! This was a lucky last minute mistake though. :)

Had some more fun with it.  ;D

You have to press space to start and stop it running. :)
Probably better to have it start automatically. I posted a little explanation on the bottom of my first post too.
