I don't think they're showing much that's new but could be interesting.
-
Might be worth just grabbing the free glasses from Sainsburys and using them to make something on the 'puter that needs them :)

My thinking too, the colours they've used don't seem to be the best choice but they work. I'm trying to get my head around how it all works now.
-
As I understand it the different coloured lenses filter out colours so you can present the left and right eye with slightly different images at the same time and therefore two views of the same scene at once that combine to produce a 3D looking image.

You know me better than that. I'm thinking of a wierd way things'll have to be drawn, I don't even think the movies have it right.

:)
You may find this interesting, don't know if you have seen it before..

Thanks, I've had a look around and there's not that many on pouet, i've only found 2 or 3 and I'm a bit surprised at that.

If you get these glasses, check out these images.

I might be wrong about the colour choice, these work really well.
-
At the movies they don't use coloured lenses any more, they use polarised lenses. Alternate frames are projected through a pair of polaroids with the polarisation at 90degrees to one another. Your specs also have the same polarisations, one over each eye. The combination effectively blacks out each eye for every other frame giving the 3d effect.
I saw Monsters v Aliens in 3d using this technique - it was pretty good.
Obviously you can't get this effect on a standard telly.

Yep, the thing I was meaning about the movies is something to do with the geometry that I have in my head and can't see it being done with 2 cameras, I saw My Bloody Valentine and it mostly looked pretty good but there's something to do with the way eyes work that I can't quite figure out.
These glasses for ch4, although using different coloured lenses they seem to work a bit differently from the blue/red or blue/green lenses and seem to give much better, almost complete colour.
3D ready Polarized TVs are on the way (some already maybe), as are TVs compatible with shutter glasses. I'm waiting to find out what Sony and others are up to wrt PS3 and blu-rays before getting a new TV, Sony have been showing off 3D TVs and they claim that all (most?) current PS3 games can be made to run in 3D with just a system update.
-
I picked up a couple of pairs of those glasses, they are rather good. one lense is a kind of brown colour, the other is lilac.
Those 3D pictures you posted looked pretty good in them.
-
->Fryer - part of the problem is that instead of 24fps going to both eyes, we get 12fps going to each eye which isn't quite enough. The same problem will happen with TVs unless somehow they manage to cram in double the number of frames per second.
Jim
-
im getting my pairs today, hopefully they havent run out.
Those image links, look a bit like a spin on a colour map used in bump mapping.
-
If they have run out, go and buy a box of Roses or Quality Streets, find a see-through red wrapper and a see-through green wrapper, then cut out two pairs of glasses shapes from the box. Sandwich the wrappers between the shapes in place of the lenses, and bingo - 3D glasses and some chocolates to eat while you watch 3D week.
-
You could also experiment with Werthers Originals and Parma Violets.
Jim

jim, with the polarising system the images are overlaid simultaneously giving full framerate to each eye, in the cinemas this needs 2 projectors. in the TVs as far as I know the polarisation is altenated for each pixel so you might only get 1/2 resolution for each eye but still full framerate. the system with shutterglasses is to work on a much higher frequency (200Hz) than the framrate so there shouldn't be any problem there either.
CK, the colours chosen for this are:
left. amber (lets everything except blue through)
right. blue (only lets blue through)
-
This is a good idea, pity we can't get the glasses here. Did anybody watch the 3D Toy Stories yet?
-
I was going to then I found out it wasnt a new Toy Story episode.
But I did go and see UP! and that was very good.
Thats a shame about not able to get the c4 glasses.
< edit > with regards to c4 glasses, not the explodable kind ;)
-
Looks like the colour choice for C4 is to avoid problems with red/green colour blindness.
The 3D Toy Story re-releases (and probable re-releases of all other Pixar works in 3D) look interesting, but I'll wait for home cinema technology to become affordable before I watch them all in 3D. I'll certainly go and see Monsters Inc and Wall-E if they are re-released.

It works a slightly different way in fooling the brain and lets you see in almost full colour. Definitely the best I've seen from the coloured glasses.

It doesn't work as well as it should for me with me being virtually blind in my right eye, those photos do work a bit though, to me they had a slight sepia tined kind of look to them but they looked more colourful than the oldschool 3D images I had seem as a child
-
Ah, that's not so good :(
There seems to be some clever selection of coloured lenses and filtering of the images that aswell as giving the stereo image it also, between the two lenses, lets all colours through and the brain manages to combine them fairly well.
I think I have a rough idea how to do the filtering but it's going to take some messing around/testing to really find out.
-
After a bit of messing around I've come up with this:
Not sure if it's anywhere near right as there seems to be a few ways to get at least some sort of 3d effect.
This looks reasonably good to me sitting 2-3m away from 32" display.
-
Hmmm, CH4 don't seem to have made much of an effort for their '3D WEEK'. This is all I can see in the listings, the Queen thing might go into some of the new technology but not sure and Derren Brown and the movies could be worth a look. Anyway, got some glasses out of it to mess around with at least.
Monday:
17.00 - (not listed as 3D) Paul O'Grady show possibly with some 3D bits
21.00 - The Queen in 3D Part 1
22.00 - Derren Brown Presents the 3D Magic Spectacular
Tuesday:
21.00 - The Queen in 3D Part 2
Wednesday:
00.40 - Flesh for Frankenstein in 3D
Thursday:
Friday:
20.00 - The Queen in 3D Part 1 (again)
21.00 - The Queen in 3D Part 2 (again)
22.00 - Friday the 13th Part III in 3D
Saturday:
21.20 - The Greatest Ever 3D Moments
22.20 - Friday the 13th Part III in 3D (again)
Sunday:
11.55 - JLS in 3D
14.10 - JLS in 3D (again)
15.00 - Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert
22.00 - Derren Brown Presents the 3D Magic Spectacular (again)
23.10 - The Greatest Ever 3D Moments (again)
-
Wot no Jaws 3D! Im definatly skipping Sunday; i've just bought a new rope.
-
<-- Those cubes really jump out of the screen, even with my dodgy eyesight.
-
Well, channel 4 have made a complete mess of this. There's really bad ghosting through the blue lens making it almost impossible to watch, I've tried adjusting my tv settings without any luck and whoever produced the derren brown 3d magic program didn't have a clue what they were doing and the show was crap anyway.
-
I wonder if they tested this with a team of Chimps? The new 3D method and filtering they've dreamt up, just doesn't do anything for me, and yes I am wearing the glasses, lol.

Do you have both eyes open? :)

What's going on?
I just found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY0RXVw1E68
make sure you select the right glasses under the video.
This is NOT what I'm seeing in the TV broadcasts.
EDIT: and this.

Nor me. :(
-
I'm not 100% sure yet but it could be something to do with the hd upscaling my dvd recorder is doing to the signal before passing it to the tv through hdmi.
-
I just have a regular tv lead going to the outside aerial and built in freeview ( updated the channel list last night )
Do you guys (that can see it in all its glory) have fairly new tvs?
There are alot of people on various google searches who can't see the C4 3D as its displayed wrong like what i gets. Those U Tube links are how I remember 3D, but it's not at all what i can watch.
-
It turns out that's what it was for me, the upscaling to the HD signal was messing it up somehow. I'm not sure if it's just messing wih the colours or if it thinks the blue channel is out of sync and is trying to fix it though.
-
Is there a way to set up a DSLR to take a couple/few pictures and then digitally turn them 3D as with HDR or will I have to shell out a few hundred quids for the new canon 3D digital?
This is more a note to self 'cause I'm getting quietly drunk here now but if anybody knows of any answers then fire away.

For still scenes you could use a tripod and slide bar, maybe possible without but not as easy to set up well.
That's probably better than using two cameras as it could be difficult getting a short enough space between the two.
-
Here's a test, It's got better geometry than what was used to create the previous image although I still have to work out how to set it up correctly.
Left/Right mouse buttons turn camera
Both mouse buttons together move forward
click on X to exit
EDIT: fixed bug that caused some objects to flicker
-
It seems to work quite effectively with the Sainsburys glasses and my limited sight in my right eye, I don't know whether the effect would be better if it were full screen ?
-
As it is at the moment nothing will be coming out of the screen like it did in the previous still image, I'm still trying to figue that out with my new calcs so for now it's only depth into the screen. I've got a few variables I can change to alter the effect but a few other things can affect it too, like the size of the screen if fullscreen or the size of the window and the distance from the viewers eyes to the screen. I'm also going to have to work out some relationship between the virtual world and the real world regarding scaling.
-
A 3D glasses comp might be cool, but not everyone can do 3D.
We would have to decide on a colour scheme, but it could be possible to code in the left/right colours and have them customisable.
There must be some resources on the internet regarding scaling.
I'll give this a try in the new year and see what I come out with.
-
It doesn't need to be 3D rendering, some things can be done with 2D.
I was thinking that about the colours being selectable too.
-
Even a 2.5D (2D stuff positioned and scaled in a 3D environment) demo could be done in bi-colour 3D.

To be honest, the take up for the last comp was so poor that I'll be thinking twice before the next one sadly...
It will have to be something with broad appeal. It's not worth running them otherwise

Sorry Jim, my reply to this wasn't quite right before. I thought the polarised system projected both images at the same time and each lens filtered out the image to each eye, that was the case with linear polarisation but with the circular polarisation used now in RealD it's a single projector with a switching polarising lens which alternates between the views, it does that at 3X the movie framerate though so the movie is still 24 fps to each eye but each eye 'sees' each frame 3 times.
