IMAGE PROCESSING CHALLENGE 2011 Voting

It is an absolute pleasure to open the voting for the Image Processing challenge!

Not so many entries as normal, however there are some really cool and interesting ones so I'd still call that a success!      In fact this challenge has ended up with some nice graphics processing tools that can be of use after the challenge. 

So, here we are - a selection of seven great entries to browse and vote on.  Some of them work with static images, others work on live effects. 

This time there is Karma and cash up for grabs.

Again, a small word about the sponsorship.  The cash prizes are made possible by the generosity of the people who donated to the treasury, also amazingly, some people have elected not to take thier prizes and re-invested their prize money into the pot to fund future challenges.  A huge thank you to the people who've sponsored DBF.

To keep things fair, here are the rules for voting and votes are checked by administrators.

Voting rules:

• Please vote for 3 entries, you MUST vote for 3, not 2 or 1.
• Please do not vote for yourself or you will be disqualified.
• Voting is open for 6 days from now.
• In the event of a tie break there will be a vote-off.
• Please view all the entries before voting.

Entry Name: Kapteenitulevaisuudessa

Description :
Padman flexes his oldschool style muscle again with a tribute to one of his favourite old cartoon television programs.  There are a selection of image processing effects on offer including motion blur, edge detection, greyscale, inverse palette and television scanlines.

Entry Name: Snap 'n Filter

Description :
In this entry, CombatKing invites you to snap an image with your webcam and apply a selection of image processing effects to the image.  There are quite a selection of effects including dithers, colour palette rotation and distortion.  If you don't want to look at yourself or don't have a webcam you can also load in your own images.

Entry Name: 18 Magic Digits

Description :
Another entry which operates on a realtime generated image, this is an implimentation of the Sobel Edge Detection algorithm, as the screen effects pass into the Sobel Window they are processed by the algorithm.  Above and below the window the graphics are pixelated.  A number of options are present to schow different effect combinations and to adjust the sensitivity and colour output of the edge detection routine.

Entry Name: Dither Ordered

Description :
Zawran has given us a great example of how to produce an ordered dither image.  It operates on static images, you select the image you want with a file selector and the program loads it in and converts it to a dithered version.  The nice thing is that it also saves the result.  The program also displays the amount of miliseconds used to create the image and these readings suggest that it would probably be fast enough to work well on a live effect too.

Description :
In this creative take on image processing, text and logos are drawn using a selection of shapes and blend modes.  You can even use the filters on a webcam image.  The music is unusual but really suits the production, but for me, the most impressive factor is the wonderful way that these shapes alter the original images, really interesting and entertaining to watch.

Entry Name: Pixel 3D

Description :
In this entry you can load in an image which gets converted into a greyscale heightmap, each pixel is turned into a 3D block, the colour from the original image is applied to the corresponding block.  The result is an extruded image which you can rotate with the mouse.  Several preset images are provided but you're also free to load your own too, Raizor suggests that you try fairly small images but I've rotated some quite large ones with no noticeable problems on my machine.

Entry Name: Median Filter

Description :
Rbz says in his entry that he followed the challenge guidelines for inspiration and decided to make a Median Filter.  This operates on static images, you can just drag and drop an image onto the program icon to run this.  You're then given some options in a Dos window to control how many passes are made over the image and the strength of the painted effect, it produces a very professional looking output.

Woohoo! Thanks to everyone who voted for me!  I'll get the prizes sorted out in the morning, been out and about most of the day today.  Congratulations to everyone who entered.  It was a tricky theme and I really enjoyed every single entry, they are all great for their own reasons
